This past week, November 17, 18, 19th one of my close friends, my son, and I drove to NYC from Maine. This trip was a trip Tyler and I planned for many years but each time it got cancelled for one reason or another. Before I knew it, Tyler had graduated High School and he was off to the Army. Tyler is a firefighter for two call companies in our area, he is the real deal, loves everything about the fire service. Tyler is respected amongst his peers, and senior firefighters for his abilities…

"The fire service is fascinated with acronyms. Some have been around for a while. PSI, GPM, and RIT are examples. Some others are new VSP and CRM for example. We are also fascinated with new ideas and techniques. We are focused on these new ideas to fix old problems. Maybe the problem is that we keep looking for solutions when we should just fix the problem.…

The Fire Prevention and Safety Grant will be opening shortly. This is one fire department's story about their successful pursuit of a FEMA grant:
Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue (CKFR), located in Silverdale, Washington, first learned about BullEx Digital Safety while observing the U.S. Navy’s Federal Fire Department’s use of a BullEx portable fire extinguisher training system at a naval base demonstration. Theresa MacLennan, Public Information and…

The Town of Colonie (TOC) Emergency Services wanted to test their fire response capabilities to a large high occupancy structure, namely Colonie High School. The challenge lay in finding smoke generators capable of producing smoke that was dense enough to create zero visibility conditions and realistic enough to simulate a structure fire. TOC Emergency Services Deputy Coordinator Gerald Paris, Jr.…

Let’s face it, the U.S. fire service is the most technologically advanced fire service in the world. We have the latest equipment, established incident command systems, set standards, and for the most part, a strong emphasis on training—and yet, a significant number of firefighters are injured and killed every year. Why? Because we’ve failed to understand how human error contributes to mishaps on the fireground.
It has been shown that 85% of all…

After two years here, I'm impressed. I've seen youngsters get advice on their future, ignorant questions get properly rebuked, old dogs discussing the way it was and the way it should be, training advice I never considered, and many others. But the one thing that always impresses me is when someone has a bad day. Whether its a really bad call, someone going through rough times, sickness of a friend, or just self doubt, this community comes together. The members bring their experience and…
