Sorry...

Sorry if we woke you

in the middle of the night.

But someone in your neighborhood,

is fighting for their life.

Sorry if we blocked the road,

and made you turn around.

But there's been a bad wreck,

with injured on the ground.

When you see us coming,

I hope you understand,

Let us have the right of way,

Someone needs a helping hand.

Sometimes a child is…

I wish you could...

See the sadness of a business man as his livelihood goes up in flames, or that family returning home, only to find their house and belongings damaged or lost for good.

Know what it is like to search a burning bedroom for trapped children, flames rolling above your head, your palms and knees burning as you crawl, the floor sagging under your weight as the kitchen below you burns.

Comprehend a wife's horror at 3a.m. as I…

Firefighters are...

Firefighters are those crazy people who run into a burning building when all others are running out.

Firefighters are those people who wake up in the middle of the night to help an old lady, who fell out of bed.

Firefighters are those people who work on half eaten meals because someone needed their help.

Firefighters are those people who have a second family that seems just like a first family.

Firefighters are those people who never…

Firefighter Down

The tones go out

In the middle of the night.

The firefighter responds

There's a fire to fight.

The apparatus rolls

As the crew gets ready

The Officer's on the radio.

The driver holds it steady.

As the truck draws near

Black smoke rolls into sight,

The firefighters are ready

To battle the orange light.

The flames are growing.

They find the occupants are out.

The hose lines are charged.

This is what it's all…

The creation of the firefighter

When the Lord was creating fire fighters, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."

And the Lord said, "Have you read the specification on this person? Fire fighters have to be able to go for hours fighting fires or tending to a person that the usual everyday person would never touch, while putting in the back of their minds the…

FIRE COMPANIES FROM FOUR Maryland counties converged on historic downtown Mt. Airy this morning in order to save the town. Departments from Frederick, Carrol, Montgomery and Howard counties all worked to bring the fire under control. Not a terribly good evening

In the world of fire/rescue, you have victims and you have people. They are not supposed to be the same. People are the ones you hang out with, get drunk with, work with, and even argue with. Victims are why you are here to do what you do; to answer the call for help, and hopefully provide a positive outcome. (Though not always the case).

This past Friday night me and my fellow firefighters had the displeasure of removing the body of a 17 yo female victim from the wreckage of a… Continue

Structure Fire 9/2/07 @ 3:45 AM

We had a fully involved two car detached garage this morning. Upon arrival, flames were blowing from both garage doors. We tagged the nearest hydrant as the chief called for an engine from the next town over since our second engine was in the shop for repairs. I grabbed the nozzle as the captain & another firefighter helped stretch the line. As I walked across the front, I noticed only one vehicle in the garage & a second detached garage on the B side. Once I got water, we attacked the… Continue

Organized Chaos

by: Lou Angeli

Organized chaos. That's how the fire scene is often described. The adrenaline charged atmosphere feels like a battleground. But in this war zone there's no time to develop a battle plan. For the firefight to be successful, action must be immediate. Firefighters have only a few precious minutes to defeat their opponent.

Back in the day, Firefighting was all about racing to the scene, donning…

Safety

Call it a pet peeve but why is doing the right thing at the right time so hard for so many, especially the "Old Guys". That being said I have been in the fire service since I was 18. So yes folks at the ripe "old" age of 37 I have 19 years on the job. I have continued to adapt when needed. Refemember no Nomex hoods? I wear it all the time. SCBA was for interior attacks only. Bullshit, SCBA should be worn on every fire, i.e. structure, vehicle, dumpster anything except maybe a brush fire,…

My First House fire

This morning i was laying in my bed and could not fall asleep. At about 2:20 am my fire pager went off and scared the shit out of me. The call was a mutual aid request from St Clair Fire for a house fire just across the river from us. I put on my clothes and made sure that my dad was ready. We ran out the door and drove to the Fire hall. When we got there some other guys were already dressed in their gear ready to…
