Finding Your Passion

I just finished an incredible book called "The Soul of A Chef", which, distilled into its most base elements, is a treatise on passion.
In this particular occurrence, it's a love story about food, about preparation of food, about the men and women who spend their lives in the pursuit of perfection; of plating, of preparation, of execution. It is a deconstruction of what differentiates the cook from the chef. I loved…

"Who Am I?"

"Who Am I?"

My profession is somewhat unique in comparison to that of the average person. At any one fixed moment in time when duty calls upon me, I am prepared to sacrifice my own life to save the lives of others I may not even know. I am willing to do this because I understand that we all make choices in life. As for myself, this is the choice and path of service that I have chosen to follow. Though my job is often rewarding, it can also be unsettling. I often reflect upon the…

Praying for our lost brother Cameron

8 days ago our Lifeguard helicopter went down. Onboard was one patient, the pilot, one nurse and one firefighter/paramedic (Cameron). The body of the nurse and the sliding door from the helicopter were found 3 days ago. Still missing, the pilot, the patient and Cameron. The search and rescue was called off yesterday due to continued bad weather and the fact that it has been 8 days since the incident. It is believed that the helicopter might be in water that could be in excess of 600 ft deep.…

What's YOUR New Year's Resolution

Times Square NY

As a departure from my usual ruminations I am looking forward to next year and, with a reasonable amount of apprehension, considering leadership goals.

The NFPA has thrust a rather large one upon us for the coming new year- Rehab. Sure we've always done it donuts, sandwiches if you're lucky, and of course all the coffee and soda that you can drink. But that doesn't play…

You'll Never Know

You'll Never Know

I wish you could know,

I wish you could feel,

But you can't, you never will

We fight back the tears,

We'll never let you see us cry,

Not even our own family.…

A probie's welcome letter

Sent to me by a friend and senior firefighter in a neighboring department...

Congratulations and welcome to the American Fire Service!

1)-Don't wait to be told to get things done around the station. If your

day slows down and your officer is preoccupied, there's a long list of

station maintenance always available to you. Wash blue rags, change roll

towels, organize what's disorganized, clean what's dirty.

2)-Along…

98% of people would say "oh shit" when they slide on ice... the other 2% are from Buffalo and would say "hold my beer and watch this shit." I thought it was funny hope you find it amusing like me.

9-11

Everyone who was alive and old enough when 9-11 happened remember where they were, what they were doing, and how they reacted to the tragedy. I remember I was in my seventh grade science class in Charleston, South Carolina when the principal called all the teachers on the intercom to tell them to turn on the TV. When they did, we all just stared at the TV. At first, we really didn't really know what was happening... until we…
