I just finished an incredible book called "The Soul of A Chef", which, distilled into its most base elements, is a treatise on passion.
In this particular occurrence, it's a love story about food, about preparation of food, about the men and women who spend their lives in the pursuit of perfection; of plating, of preparation, of execution. It is a deconstruction of what differentiates the cook from the chef. I loved it, I loved every word.
What affected me most, and is my raison d'etre about life, is that ultimately whether you choose to pursue your passion in the culinary arts, in the fire sciences, or in playing ping-pong, it's the passion that drives you to become something more than yourself. It's the passion that leads you to self-educate, to crave the experience, to share your experiences with others, to teach, and to immerse yourself in the tactics and the tactile.
It is what defines you....regardless of where your passion lies. I subscribe to the ideal that a life lived without passion is no life at all . However I choose to apply my energies and illustrate my goals is irrelevant providing that I give all of myself to the pursuit, and that it feeds my soul. If I can spend the rest of my days staying true to that course, then it has not been an idle existence.
