My side job for relaxation..ahhhhh listening to the sound of a scrollsaw!

Howdy yall from San Antonio Texas. Since retiring from the Fire Dept. and living on what is a so-called pension for a family of four. Terry, my wife of 20 years and 2 growing boys, Brandon 19 in college for computer science/coding and Kevin 13, a seventh grader, it gets really really tight. So what did I do? I got a second job as a nurse. I thought I could change some things but as with everything, theres so much red tape. And I found out later, you could work a a local barbecue restaurant…

Firematic Suicide

First responders are killing themselves, one seatbelt at a time.

Like lemmings drawn to the edge of a precipice, firefighters, EMT's, Fire police and other emergency responders are engaged in a race to the death, literally. Rollovers, ejections, blunt force trauma, crush victims, decapitations.....do I have your attention yet? We talk about how to do the job better and faster, and the volunteer services in particular seem to feel the compulsion to defend or justify their efforts vs.…

Creation of Firefighters

When the Lord was creating Firefighters, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "Your doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."

And the Lord said "Have you read the specification of this person?

Firefighters have to be able to go for hours fighting fires or tending

to a person that the usual every day person would never touch, while

putting in the back of their mind the circumstances. They…

barn fire

BRADY TOWNSHIP, HUNTINGDON COUNTY -- Flames engulf a barn in Huntingdon County, and we have unconfirmed reports that a number of dogs may have died in the blaze.

The fire broke out around 1:00 PM Wednesday. It happened along Route-655 in Brady Township, Huntingdon County.

The fire destroyed a barn, several smaller shed buildings, and two kennel buildings.

One eyewitness told us no one was home at the time. An Amish family apparently owns the property, and lives… Continue

The Life of A Fireman by Dewey

Well here I am again writing in my space I call my blog. I have had something wondering in my mind now for a while that I was asked a while back by a grade school kid. She asked me what it was like to be a fireman. Well hince to my blog title The life of a fireman was born.

Well I answered her question by saying it was fun and exciting. Never a dull moment and always enjoy helping outhers and she was happy to know that. But in reality being a fire fighter means…

Monkey See, Monkey Do: Failure to Yield

Someone on this site mentioned how dangerous the driving public's refusal to yield to emergency vehicles has become. He then commented that perhaps it's time for OFPC to distribute a public service announcement reminding drivers that they must yield the road to an emergency vehicle using lights and sirens.

(See Section 1144 of the Vehicle & Traffic Law in NYS)

We know what John Q.…

NIMS and the beuracratic red tape that it has created.

I had to sit through another long two days of NIMS training. This time it was IS 400, but it really doesn't matter what they call it, they are all pretty much the same. The class starts out with the obligatory review of everything that we have already learned, which usually means we are going to go over the previous class completely. After lunch we finally get started on the "new" stuff. This time we were learning about the state and federal level of response. Now don't get me wrong I truly…

I wish you could...

See the sadness of a business man as his livelihood goes up in flames, or that family returning from home, only too find their house and belongings damaged or lost for good.

Know what its like too search a burning bedroom for trapped children, flames rolling above your head, your palms and knees burning as you crawl, the floor sagging under your weight as the kitchen below you burns.

Comprehend a wife's horror at 3am as I check her husband of 40 years for a pulse and find none.…

I am from Buffalo, no matter how far I move

I'm from Buffalo. We eat chicken wings, not buffalo wings. Jack Kemp is a quarterback, not a politician. We drink Labatt Blue and love it. Mighty Taco always has preference over Taco Bell. Pop, not soda and Pepsi, not Coke. They are sneakers not tennis shoes. It's a sucker, not a lollipop. Bison Chip Dip, La Nova Pizzeria, Aunt Rosie's Loganberry, Chia vettas Chicken, and Ted's Hot Dogs are all too familiar... not to forget Taffy's Shakes and Charlie the butcher. A fake ID is… Continue

Firefighting Offers a Way Out for California's Offenders

I'm posting this story because I'm hoping to get reaction, especially from East Coast and Midwest firefighters about using prison inmates for fire-rescue work. It should prove to be controversial. I don't necessarily advocate the idea -- I only report the stories.

Generally ignored by the media is the fact that 4,000 of California's… Continue
