It is that time of year again to pay respect to those who have served, will serve, or do serve. I am sending a shout out to my friends in the 501st and 4th ID till serving. To all my brothers and sisters in the US military who took the oath to serve and protect the USA from all emenies. Though our new president elect disrepected us in not covering his heart or saluting our flag we will defend him because that is our job. So know that America is watching and we knowt hat there are many things…

I live in a college town. I can see one of the college kids doing this. Taken from KCMQ.com.
Here’s some advice to take to heart: a blowtorch is not a good substitute for a broom! Galen Winchell of Georgia set his house on fire as he cleaned cobwebs from exterior eaves with a blowtorch. After torching his home for a short time, Galen noticed smoke pouring from the attic. (Duh!!) The fire was contained to one part of the house, but the entire home had smoke and water…

We did such a good job last night. I like "good" fires where everything goes right. Well, almost everything. This morning @ 5am we were called back to the same location for a "re-kindle". There was no fire @ 11 pm when we left the premisis. Anyway, the FM (we are giving him a work out too) has it under investigation but he says that it could have still been part of the original fire but hadn't flamed yet. If a spark blew over into the unburned part of the crawlspace it might have smoldered…

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...November 10, 2008
Tonight was advancing hoseline upstairs to the second floor with a 3 person team and practicing the skills we learned last week. Since the hose was only 1-1/2 I could handle it much better and I was much much more confident. The weird thing to me though was the perception...the instructors kept saying get closer but I thought I was close. I also didn't feel the heat at all like the guy behind me and my SCBA ran out of air but I was…

Do you feel as though your personnel can really handle physical stress? Even if they have passed state physical agility testings?
It may not have to be a four-hundred pound patient between the bed and dresser, or the patient you found in a cramped basement that must be carried carefully up a flight of stairs. There are 24
movable vertebrae in your spine. The discs, ligaments, and muscles involved in the movement of these vertebrae can be damaged, torn, twisted, herniated,…

The training was so great! It's really something to see a firefighter down and being dragged out of house, none the less one of your departments own. It really rocks you to the core and makes everything seem surreal. All the videos and movies I've seen have taken on a new light for me. Granted it was training only, it all seemed so real once we got beyond the shit shooting and got down to bussiness. I know that this what I want, and I'll push my way through the rough patchs that will come and…

It's funny, we go several days without a call from time to time. Most of our calls are First Responder EMS calls or MVAs, small fires and THIS WEEK brush fires. Except that Monday afternoon we responded to a fully envolved structure fire. It was a total loss, not really a wonder considering that it was totally engulfed when we arrived on scene up a little windy, rutty dirt road. The IC called out to the water officer to send in a tanker, the truck went in, dumped his load & turned around…

Ten years ago, in a spare bedroom, a team of … er, well, myself and Chris Hebert (with the help of the elusive Travis Good), started a little site called Firehouse.com. Since then, it’s become the largest Web portal for the fire service.
Two years later, Paul Andrews joined us and helped us turn our ideas into revenue as our sales ace. We covered the fire service from every perspective, through Worcester and 9/11, the launch of the Fire ACT grants program, Ladder 49 and…

I am the new training officer for my fire department. Tomorrow is my first big training exercise. We are going to smoke up a house and run rescue attempts. I am excited about doing this but I am nervous that some wont like the excercise that we are doing. I know that I cant please everybody but I want to do a good job and hopefully get more people envolved in training. If anybody has an idea about getting people interested in training please let me know.

Our dept is smoking a house tomorrow at 9a.m. It'll be my first training exercise! I'm excited and nervous all at the same time. We're doing it to get some practice and brush up on some things we don't do a lot. Also I'm going to learn to spike the bag for our Medics... Have no clue how. I've gotta work my paid job tonight and that sucks. But what can you do???? Argh I just wanna work EMS and EMS only. Have no clue where to start in doing that. So if anyone who knows how to guide me in that…

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...November 8, 2008
Last night was our second live burn at the Academy. I am starting to get it with teamwork. Instead of groups of three, we were put into groups of four, and our squad of twelve had to haul charged hoselines into a garage area where we were taught about rollover, with re-inforcing the ceiling S pattern, and hitting the seat of the fire.
I was really sick though last night and knew I would not be as strong as I usually am.…
