I am the new training officer for my fire department. Tomorrow is my first big training exercise. We are going to smoke up a house and run rescue attempts. I am excited about doing this but I am nervous that some wont like the excercise that we are doing. I know that I cant please everybody but I want to do a good job and hopefully get more people envolved in training. If anybody has an idea about getting people interested in training please let me know.

Congrats on the promotion. Every dept has the same problems with somebody not liking the drill. We are a vol dept in upstate NY and have many of the old timers who just insist that there is no reason to drill ..."all you need to do is put the water on the fire!", young (read new) firefighters who think taking Firefighter 1 makes them experts and a bunch of people who think they know everything because .."this is the way it's always been done!". What you need to do is ignore all their negative comments, start with some of the basics (so you know what they can do), keep the pace up ( no one likes to be bored), do a quick review at the end so that you can get everyones opinion ( everyone...not just officers) and make sure that you post in advance what the upcoming drill will be. As always, be safe.

Darrin:
Congratulations on your promotion to training officer. You have the single most important position in your fire department.
To help the process go smoothly tomorrow, don't have any holes in the schedule. Keep everyone busy, even during the set ups of evolutions. When you have a lot of idle time and standing around, interest in training is lost pretty quickly.
Be well organized and make sure that you have plenty of help.
I will suggest that you go to this link and read the article between now and tomorrow. It puts the whole thing into perspective.
Have a safe and successful burn.
