FDNY firefighters went to work on an apartment fire in the Spanish Harlem Section of Manhattan. The fire took place at 101 East 119th Street and Park Avenue. Early reports place the fire on the second floor of a six story occupied multiple dwelling.

Today was a day NO ONE should have to deal with, unless one of our own has fallen because of old age.
It started out like any other semi normal day for a Volunteer Fire Department. Aside from getting the crews ready for the funeral, the Captains and Chiefs making last minute rig assignments, the tones go off around 1130 for an unknown Medical. The Captain and I jump in the squad and head out, deal with a hyperventalating patient, and return to the station. Our Engine Co, 561, is…

Now for some about the Fire Rescue Service (FRS) of which I'm a member.
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) of Victoria is the organisation responsible for fire and other emergencies for most of the State. We only have one really large city, Melbourne. The FRS for the CBD and about 50% of the suburbs is the all career Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board - like long names, don't we? So we call it the MFB. The CFA covers the rest of the suburbs plus all the provincial…

Okay. So I told myself today....'Self, you really should start a blog. You would be really cool to start writing down what you think and stuff on a regular basis.'
And as I was saying that to myself I started thinking of all the cool stuff that I would write down for today. You know just the stuff that happens to everyone everyday.
So as I'm talking to myself and thinking to myself I said to myself, " Sure, that's what I'll do today."
Well, now that I'm doing…

After being off for about a yr from EMS and about a yr and half from firefighting, it's great to be back at it. So far I'm just doing EMS again. I am working as a shift volunteer with Cowlitz 6 fire (Castle Rock), as an EMT-B on the Medic unit. This is my first time working on a transport medic, before I was just a responder to the scene for BLS. I have yet to transport my first pt on my own, but drove the medic in on an ALS call that was kinda fun and good experience.

Allright, this being my first blog, I'll try to stay on task. I started strength training about three weeks ago for a Firefighters Challenge coming up at Cody Fire School in May. It will resemble a CPAT test and a few of the same challenges at the National Challenge (not as long of a course). I am turning 40 in June but dont feel it. I am in pretty good shape (so I thought) and am just trying to finish as close to the top 10 as I can. Chances are good because they appear to only have 8 or 9…

I just had my orientation for In-House Medic. So as of Saturday March 15th I will be running with the Medic crew every 6 days for a 12 Hour shift. I am so excited that I cannot wait, but at the same time I am very nervous. This is the exact direction that I am looking for. this Fall I plan on going to school for Paramedics, and with a little luck I can maybe get a fulltime job in the Fire/ EMS field.

Finally a site that has firefighters and ems that actually blog and communicate with each other. Old stories, new stories, ideas and comments traded amongst the ranks. Career and volunteer in one place. WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. Later.

I know that this may be old news to those of you in NYC but I just learned of it...and frankly I'm disgusted. It is a sad comentary on the direction of the fire service in this country...increasingly nerds and bean counters are running the show instead of jakes. Its a damn shame if you ask me. If this is the most important thing the FDNY brass has to worry about then things must be going swimingly in the big apple. Excellent way to destroy the unique character and morale of a great department…

Ever since I was a kid, I've enjoyed all sorts of physical activity. It didn't really matter what it was, I was out there instead of sitting at home like a lump. What a shame the kids nowadays have so many other distractions. I know that they have some pretty decent thumb muscles, but that is where it ends.
My favorite team sport has always been and always will be Baseball. I even like to watch it, not just play it. I don't participate in it as much as I used to, but when I get the…

Hello all I just got off duty and so glad to be home and spend some time with my man before he leaves again. Hope all is well. Looking forward to Saturday and my NYC trip. Heard some disturbing news from NY that the EMS drum and pipes were banned from the St. Pat's parade. Not sure what that is all about. There is always some controversy pre parade up there. Will have to keep checking the NY Daily News. Could'nt find anything last night.

Who are you...
And from where have you come...
What things have you accomplished ...great and small.....
Whose lives have you touched..
Will they miss you when you're gone...
The suffering is almost over...
Your pulse grows weak under my fingers...
Your breathe draws short....further between...
Will you leave many behind...
I see life slipping from you..
But, I will not stop until you do..
and even then I may go a bit more...
I'm here…

THE CREED OF FREEDOM
INTRINSIC NATURE OF RIGHTS
I believe that only individuals have rights, not the collective group; that these rights are intrinsic to each individual, not granted by the state; for if the state has the power to grant them, it also has the power to deny them, and that is incompatible with personal liberty.
I believe that a just government derives its power solely from the governed. Therefore, the state must never presume to do anything beyond what…

Invisible Hero
At night you turn the scanner on, waiting for a call,
one comes in, its load and clear,
the house it's going to fall.
Five seconds and your out the room,
your the first one down the stairs,
two minutes and your on the truck,
doing what no one else dares.
Five minutes later, the truck pulls up,
you scurry out the door,
the flames are blazing through the roof,
what more could you ask…

The trailer is the last one on the right, pressed up against the infinite night sky. I swear I can see everything and nothing at the same time in that sky as I round the corner to search for the stairs. Eric shines a flashlight at the ground and I see the beginnings of a step. With one foot reaching out for it, I look up.
"Shit!" I jump back into Eric, who catches me around the waist without hesitation, pulling me away from whatever unseen danger I encountered. He starts laughing as…

The rain beats down heavily on my windshield as I wait for the light to change. My driver's side window is open, as I listen to the sound the water makes as it smacks against the road and my outstretched hand. My hair is sopping wet, still dripping puddles onto my now see-through shirt. I shiver slightly, but I'm not truly cold. Two boys stand on the corner next to me, waiting for their turn to cross the street.
Death Cab for Cutie sings to me of being loved one day as the light turns…

It's a busy night at the station; it's Wednesday, which is known by many to be the night of the clown cars. On any given Wednesday night, you're bound to have at least three and a half full crews ready to go. But, of course, nothing ever happens.
The county is quiet, save a few fire alarms here and there, but they all end unspectacularly.
I sit on the couch, yawning as I work on a cross-stitch. My fingers are numb, but I push the needle through again, watching as the teal thread…
