Fire Fighters Who Love Hockey

A hockey buddy and fellow EMT of mine from up in White Horse sent this to me and I knew I had to pass it on to my FFN friends, although.......Complete Psycho??? I think maybe that's stretching it a bit, lol. Take care and be safe.

Which One Are You?

It's a well-known fact that there are only two seasons in Canada: summer and hockey. According to long-standing tradition, the former starts with the hoisting of the Stanley Cup, as fans in an American city… Continue

Well here is Rule 5, this may get REAL personal, if so....you need to do some thinking.

Well, it looks like I not the only one that's going through some of this. Again, over the last 6 or 7 years of going around and teaching & learning from firefighters, I keep seeing us making the same mistakes. As I see it, it's the same problems over and over. Look, I don't know everything, matter of fact, what I have learned, I've had to pay for most of these lessons. All I ask of my students, is please don’t repeat my mistakes, make your own, just don’t repeat mine.

With that being… Continue

Bad Case of the Writer's Block Blues

Well, it was bound to happen at some point. Just when I least expected it, I've kinda hit the wall. It's actually not that I have nothing to write about or nothing I care to discuss, but each time I have leapt forward with an idea in the past week, it has turned into a ten-paragraph monster that I don't care to hit the "save" button for or more likely, one you all probably wouldn't care to read either.

I mean I could just get all over the economy and how it is impacting the fire… Continue

Not "Fallen" but "Falling"!

Today we responded to a fire on Line Creek with Lily. I was getting ready to leave in the tanker to go find a hydrant to refil, and realized that we had deployed the hose we would need and I had to go get a hose to take to the hydrant with us. Always trying to help somehow, I started getting out of the passenger side of the truck (where I had been sitting) to get the hose. Believe me, I was holding on with 3 points of contact as I was getting out of the truck, and I fell anyway...(Yes I use 3… Continue

2008 Memorial Weekend

Written on October 8, 2008....

I just returned from the 2008 National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. Every year we are reminded of what can happen and what does happen in the fire service. We are reminded of what can go wrong and what does go wrong. We are reminded of mistakes that are made which may cost someone their lives. What I ask of you is this, to take care of yourselves when you are called to duty. Don't do it for yourselves, but do it for those who love you and care… Continue

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

This was a busy weekend with fire calls. I am not allowed to speak about them but we were busy! Anyway, tonight was my second night teaching 9th grade CCD at my Church. The topic was having trust and faith...faith in God of course and trust in each other. I wanted to think of a cool thing to try since 9th graders on Sunday nights would rather be home AIMing their friends.

So I had 3 of them do a drill. A search drill sort of like we did at the Academy. Lights out, holding onto the… Continue

Leadership Conference Home Run in Syracuse!

I’ve just returned from Syracuse, NY where I was assisting with running the FASNY Fire Service Leadership Conference. This was an eight hour, one-day program focusing on the needs of our current and future fire service leaders in terms of risk management decisions, the tactics and strategies used effectively by true leaders, and mindful strategic thinking on the fire ground.

The day started significantly earlier for me and the FASNY Chiefs Committee than it did for most, as we had… Continue

Piercings & other thoughts

This is a reply I wrote to a discussion of "piercings". I thought it was worth repeating. You can agree or disagree but if you THINK about what I am saying, I have accomplished my mission. As always, this is my blog & if you don't want to read it, there is a little button there you can push so you can go back to another page & you don't have to read what I am thinking or how I feel about this topic.

Goldfeder: One LESS Firefighter Standing

CHIEF BILLY GOLDFEDER

www.FireFighterCloseCalls.com

With the operating conditions in Detroit, so many wondered what would eventually happen related to DFD, as far as their Firefighters being injured, or worse, killed in the line of duty. And when I heard about the comments so emotionally SCREAMED by a Detroit Fire Sgt today. "What a complete waste," ...he died.. "For what? For what? Some dump of a house?" The words hit… Continue

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

Today I quit a job that I took for a very small wage to get my foot in the door of a company I thought I wanted to work at. I got reprimanded 3x for going to a structure fire on my way back from lunch. We were only in training and other people were told they would leave early to get their kids, etc. and could make up the time.

It was a judgement call. I was like 25 feet away when the call came in. I thought to myself...go back to class or… Continue
