Designing for firefighters!!

Hi, my name is Martina and I'm a mechanical engineering student. I'm currently taking a design class which focuses on firefighters with the intention of eventually designing a product which caters specifically to the needs of firefighters on call. Right now my team is in the early stages of the design process, and are trying to become better acquainted with the lifestyle, needs, values etc. of firefighters (and specifically firefighters on call.) It would be greatly appreciated if all you… Continue

Blog 2 Breaking the barrier

Hello all again! This blog is going to be spent describing my quest to become hired as a paid firefighter. If you haven't read, I have been a firefighter for almost 15 years now. (500 calls a year no EMS) I became interested in becoming paid about 5 years ago, and promptly started to look for open…

Help Support Fallen Firefighter Chris Kangas

First off I would like to thank everyone for their support through the long fight. We still need as much support as possible to help get Chris and all other fallen junior firefighters the recognition they deserve. Signatures on the petition are greatly needed so please add your name and ask anyone you know to do the same. The link for the site is http://www.petitiononline.com/ChrisLOD/petition.html.

I am also trying to think of something special to do for his mother for his 21st birthday.… Continue

rules of ems

1. Sick people don’t bitch.

2. Try not to say "oh shit' when approaching a trauma patient.

3. The patient’s has the emergency not you.

4. All heart rhythms will eventually change to one you know how to treat.

5. Pray your partner is not stupid.

6. The more stuff you see on an EMT’s belt, the newer they are. (except For 2 people, Me, Even though I am not an EMT, and Paramedic Neal Stone)

7. All bleeding will eventually stop.

8. No… Continue

The 343

343

It's funny how people remember us

From that fateful day

As the heroes who climbed the towers

Passing workers on the way

They see the footage of us in the lobby

Preparing for the haul

The look on our faces, they say

Surely says it all

"They knew they were going to die",

They tell each other

"You can see it in their eyes as they

Greet a fellow brother"

They fail to…

The Last Alarm

The Last Alarm

My father was fireman. He drove a big red truck

and when he'd go to work each day he'd say, "Mother wish me luck."

Then Dad would not come home again 'til sometime the next day.

But the thing that…

Being a Firefighter...

Being a Firefighter...

Who among us hasn't ever wondered as we stand in the cold, dark, wee hours of the morning. "God, why an I here? Why am I in the freezing rain at 2am pulling hoses and trying to keep warm? Why?" But who among us hasn't glowed with pride while we stand around twenty-five seven year-olds during a fire safety class as they stare in awe at that "big red truck", and scared yellow…

Quotes on Firefighters and Firefighting

When a man becomes a fireman his greatest act of bravery has been accomplished. What he does after that is all in the line of work. ~Edward F. Croker

I have no ambition in this world but one, and that is to be a fireman. The position may, in the eyes of some, appear to be a lowly one; but we who know the work which the fireman has to do believe that his is a noble calling. Our proudest moment is to save lives. ~Edward F. CrokerI can think of no more…

Dusting

Received this as an E-Mail and thought it well worth sharing within the community. Please feel free to copy/paste and send on to those that you feel should read this.

I learned something new today and hope that I never have to treat a patient that has done this, but at least now I know what…

Life's Little Reminders

The journey has always been about laughing together, loving each other, seeking adventure, believing in our dreams and making a difference.....but sometimes we forget.

In the game of life it's a good idea to have a few early losses, which relieves you of the pressure of trying to maintain an undefeated season.

The First Responder's Prayer

I wrote this short prayer for everybody,

The First Responders Prayer

By Rev. Robert A. Crutchfield

Father in Heaven,

Please make me strong when others are weak, brave when others are afraid, and vigilant

when others are distracted by the chaos.

Provide comfort, and companionship to my family when I must be away.

Serve beside me and protect me, as I seek to protect others.

Amen

My own prayer is that you will honor me by praying this… Continue

The Battle of Agincourt "Band of Brothers"

"Whoever does not have the stomach for this fight, let him depart. Give him money to speed his departure, since we do not wish to die in that man's company. Whoever lives past today and comes home safely will rouse himself every year on this day, show his neighbor his scars, and tell embellished stories of all their great feats of battle. These stories he will teach his son and from this day until the end of the world, we shall be remembed. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; for…

Perceptions-

Not too long ago, we had a discussion among our union membership about an issue that our Union President brought up. This discussion was being held on our local's website

message board. I came a bit late to the party and discovered that

someone had made a post or two that didn't set too well with our

President. So, without thinking about it, he had the webmaster

remove those posts and then posted a message stating that he had…
