What Happened in Charleston…And Why?

by Lou Angeli

Charleston, SC (August 18, 2007) -- The tragic fire that snuffed the lives of nine of Charleston’s Bravest is the worst tragedy beset the fire service since 9/11/01. Of course the immediate need following the disaster was to mourn the loss of so many great men, and console their families.

But now -- months following the incident, after reports and critiques are beginning to flow in. In a nutshell, we’re learning that the Charleston Fire Department is…

Today is the 1 year anniversary of the day when the woman shot herself on the Meijer parking lot. The following blog is copied from my old Live Journal blog which I wrote in the days following the incident. I've left the spelling as is, please understand that I was in no mood for spell check at the time. R.I.P. Deborah.

BANDIT - CHANDLER P D K-9 Down - Pray For Us as We Attend The Memorial

I have a very personal attachment to Chandler Arizona Police Department. I have known most all of the ole timers for years. It was Chandler PD that worked with me on my children's case, so I have a special bond with all the guys.

Sgt. Tom Lovejoy, was also a personal friend and I also knew Bandit his K-9. One of Tom's other K-9's helped our family in some interesting situations along the way.

Tom Lovejoy is still on duty and, if found to have violated policy, could face… Continue

firefighter hiring and promotions

Just a question to take the pulse of firefighter nation...Should firefighter and medic hiring be strictly a meritocracy based on testing results and educational backgound (ie. degrees, certifications, licences), or should other factors be involved (ie. politics, friendships)??

August 19,2007 Train Sparks a rash of R.R. Tie fires

Well, this morning i was awoken by Petal Fire Departments Tone, the call R.R. tracks on fire. They informed us we had some in the county on fire as well so we responded with our new brush truck and engine 2 i think we put a total of 6 ties out that had burned out completely, then went back into petal with our brush truck into an area they could not get an engine. So from about 5 this morning till 830 or so we were running up and down that the tracks pretty funny if you ask me. Now i just hope… Continue

Myth about Firefighters

All of us have heard it. All emergency personell are accussed of it. Some people truely believe that the only reason we join the fire dept, ems or even police is so we can feel powerful and for the almighty lights and sirens.

Recently, I heard a person accusing my fire department of this idiotic idea. Although I did not say anthing because I knew I would loose my temper and make the department look bad, I couldnt help but let it anger me. How could people even come up with this idea?…

New to this

To understand my situation: In my culture, being a firefighter wasn't something that my parents and family wanted. I'm the type of person that always wants to help people, so I decided to become a physical education teacher. It's a cool job, I get to teach students sports, coach, have holidays, and vacations. But every boyhood dreams of being a firefighter, police officer, and etc. I always remember the excitement and awe when a fire truck drove by sirens blaring and red lights flashing. That… Continue

THE FIREMAN!

He is the guy next door . A mans man with the memory of a little boy . He has never gotten over the excitement of engines and sirens and danger . He is a guy like you and me with wants and worries and unfilled dreams . Yet he stands taller than most of us . He is a fireman. He puts it all on the line when the bell rings . A fireman is at once the most fortunate and least fortunate of men. He is a man who saves lives because he's seen to much death . He is a gentle man because he has seen the… Continue

Reducing the Fatalities to our Brothers

It never ceases to amaze me that almost every day Billy Goldfeder has to post to the secret list another FF fatality or serious injury. Our job is dangerous, risky and what we do. I honestly thought that by this point in my Emergency Service career we would have made a difference in reducing the loss of life and critical injuries we suffer. I am continiually amazed that parts of our American Fire Service still don't have 2 in 2 out, RIT, or even wear seatbelts. I truely wish that we could…

Federal Firefighters

Anyone interesting in sharing or needing information about the federal fire departments please feel free to discuss and ask. I currently am a federal firefighter and the union president working on a navy installation. We have gone through some hard times with budget cutbacks, COW, loss of manning, regionalization and not to mention the weizels south of where I work running the show now. On the upside we train alot and respond to many different types of incidents that are challenging because of… Continue
