To understand my situation: In my culture, being a firefighter wasn't something that my parents and family wanted. I'm the type of person that always wants to help people, so I decided to become a physical education teacher. It's a cool job, I get to teach students sports, coach, have holidays, and vacations. But every boyhood dreams of being a firefighter, police officer, and etc. I always remember the excitement and awe when a fire truck drove by sirens blaring and red lights flashing. That is the case with me.

In the last few years I've been meeting and becoming good friends with some of Chicago's bravest firefighters, who have gone out of their way to let me hang out at their firehouses and to get an experience that almost as good as being an actual firefighter. The thing that stinks is that is not the easiest to get into a department, but I'm going to give it a shot, and if it doesn't work out. The bonds that I have made is well worth it.

So the plan is this: since I've been trained as a bls first aid and cpr instructor and since alot of firefighters are cross-trained as emt/paramedics. I plan on enrolling to emt school and at the same time continue my full time job of teaching physical education and coaching. Some people think I'm nuts but I something that i feel ike I gotta do and do it soon before things change in my family.

So if there is any one out there that can give me guidance or if there are people that will listen to my babbling I'd like to meet you and pick your brain. Oh yeah I also collect fire department patches and t-shirts and etc. So if yo want to trade let me know.

Whatever you need, let me know. I have been quite successful in helping people start their careers. Just remember, not everyone gets hired the first time. Dont give up. Stay in the game, and if you went to high school with me, you are not getting any younger.

Dude, go for it! Even if you don't make it the first time, go for it again! If you re-try at the same dept. usually the same people administer the tests & they will most likely remember you if you come back for a 2nd time. That shows tyhat you're really interested & serious. Try asking those Chicago FFs for some tips. They are sure to give you some recommended reading or study guides or something like that.
Good luck,
Mike
