Some Info About our Brothers and Sisters in Clearwater, Florida

At the Florida Professional Firefighters Convention this past Friday, over 500 delegates representing over 26,000 professional fire fighters in Florida UNANIMOUSLY voted to boycott the City of Clearwater, Pinellas County Florida, and the Florida Firefighter Olympics.

The Boycott is over the unfair and illegal treatment of firefighters within Clearwater. This includes, sexual discrimination, illegal firings, and absolutely ignoring all aspects of the contract agreed to and signed by… Continue

A video worth watching

As we come up on the anniversary of the tragic loss of nine brothers in Charleston, my battalion officer played a video for me. I'm not going to lie, I was crying like a baby right in the station. Its sad, but, powerful and motivating.

Its a real reminder that everything we do can affect those around us, even if we are gone. You'll have to cut and paste the link, but I promise it is worth the effort.

Employment Information...

Dress Code:

You are advised to come to work dressed according to your salary.

If we see you wearing Prada shoes and carrying a Gucci bag, we will

assume you are doing well financially and therefore do not need a

raise.

If you dress poorly, you need to learn to manage your money better, so

that you may buy nicer clothes, and therefore you do not need a raise.

If you dress just right, you are right where you need to be… Continue

Knee surgery, the sequel

Monday saw yet another chapter in the ongoing saga of my arthritic knees. I had my right knee scoped, and, minus tons of bad cartlidge, I am well on the road to recovery.

This time I am being far more co-operative and am not trying to walk immediately after surgery. Hey, I am a self-sufficient kind of person. I don't like asking for every little thing, it makes me feel like I'm being a pest. On the other hand, I really should be happy that I've got someone willing to be my… Continue

West Palm Beach FD

Earlier today, I read something about yet another senseless shooting in Wendy's in West Palm, Florida. I didn't pay too much attention to it. I wasn't feeling well today and more bad news just wasn't sitting well.

So, I just read the headlines on my Yahoo and saw that one of the victims was a newly promoted lieutenant with West Palm Beach FD, shot in the back by a damn coward while his family waited in the parking lot.

I've known some of the West Palm firefighters from… Continue

Some worthwhile information (thanks FirefighterCloseCall.com)

I was poking around for some research and ended up spending the better part of the evening surfing the FirefighterCloseCall.com website. Thank goodness I was alone at home because I spent a good deal of time yelling at the computer while watching some of the videos on the website. To be honest, I wasn't completely alone and I am still apologizing to the four cats who were trying to sleep during this endeavor.

At any rate, I know that I am capable of doing some damn stupid things.… Continue

OMG...Junkyard Wars!!!

While recovering today, I happened upon the old show 'Junkyard Wars' on the Science Channel. Hold the sarcastic comments, there are cool shows on the Science Channel and I consider it a cheap way of furthering my education. Stop it...I mean it....quite laughing.

Anyway, you might remember 'Junkyard Wars' as the show with two teams plopped in the middle of a junkyard and tasked with building a vehicle to perform an assigned task using only what they can find in the…

Crutches are the tools of the devil....and mean people

So, I go to the doctor's office on Friday because my knees sound like a rice crispy bomb going off whenever I change elevation. I've always had bad knees and I finally was convinced to go see someone (this was after the attempt to self medicate with glucosamine, etc.)

The doctor took four x-rays in the office and talked to me for about five minutes. The conversation went something like, "Holy crap, you have really bad knees. Which one hurts the worst? The left one? Ok, we'll scope you…

Thank goodness the fire truck is smarter than I am.

We started off our day with the usual routine- check the truck, make fun of the new guy, drink about ten cups of coffee (ok, I'm not that bad about it- maybe only three). So we had a public education program at one of the local pre-schools.

No big deal; make the new guy dress up, teach the kids some fire safety, show them the truck, and let them 'flow' a small forestry line. One of my firefighters stayed with me outside and we proceded to show off our tools and cool stuff to…

Whew! Passed it!

Wonder of wonders! I finally stopped putting it off and took my written test to ride out of class as an acting lieutenant. Oh, guess you might want to know how I did.....

LOL. I passed with the highest grade so far! Would have had a perfect score if I hadn't gone back and changed a few answers. But, 90% works for me. I really need to get over my persistent fear of failing. That night, I ended up floating out to one of the other stations and I had to ride up. Nothing…

Happy New Year!!

Hope everyone is having a great New Years Eve!! I've been suffering from lack of laptop as my hard drive crashed and burned (why, no I had not backed anything up in ages)

So, I've been puttering along and borrowing the better half's computer.

At any rate, I wish everyone a happy, safe, and prosperous New Year!!

Stay safe

Florida firefighters- here is the Save Our Services website

Anyone who lives in Florida knows that the tax reform referendum is coming up on January 29th. Anyone in emergency services or public education also knows that what is being proposed is not going to help home owners and will endanger jobs.

I've been reading the local news publications and the comments posted on their websites are alarming. Many ignorant individuals believe that Florida's tax problems are due mostly to the wages that firefighters are being paid. Some go so far as to… Continue

The funeral

My Honor Guard just helped out with a funeral for a firefighter from a neighboring agency. It really affected me, I think that I'm just starting to get old and emotional. A few of my guys knew the fallen firefighter. I felt like I needed to do something more, so I put fingers to keyboard and I wrote a little synapsis of what a firefighter funeral is like. Just something that civilians might be able to read and relate to.

I wanted to share it with my brothers and sisters…

You O2 sat is what???

So, I will be the first to admit that I am spoiled. I am on the ladder truck, which is the promary Special Ops truck in the city. My station also has the only rescue truck based out of it. Translation- rescue runs most of the medical calls and I roll over and go back to sleep. Life is GOOD.

Last shift, I knew things were going to get bad when the rescue crew returned from a call with an old duffer who couldn't breath and refused to go to the hospital. Sure enough, rescue got banged…

This is really, really disturbing

A friend of mine posted this on MySpace. Its kind of a health warning, I suppose.

BUTTER VS. MARGARINE...

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do to with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it…

Its Almost Halloween!!!

I am so easy to amuse. And, I am sad that I will be missing Halloween at home because I'll be in a class. Oh well!

A while ago, I posted a short story about an old fire lieutenant and his death in a flashover. Just yesterday, I entered that story in a contest on Helium.com in the short story section. Wish me luck.

I've had some real ups and downs over the last week or so, the least of which is my own frustration with not being able to resolve a problem that vexes me greatly. On…
