Well, I am on this site, and I cant seem to find the patch exchange page. So, I am Providence Fireman, and our collection of State Capital patches is 49 strong, we cant seem to get the 50th state which is Bismarck, N.D. I did write them, and call them, but they seem to think that due to Homeland secutriy issues, or some nonsense they wont exchange, or sell a patch, however we did get one from the Bismarck ND Police..lol Anyway. If anyone has a Bismarck, N.D. patch to trade, or sell to the…

Fire can be one of nature’s most devastating natural forces. However it can also be one of the most scientific. I am almost certain that almost any normal person doesn’t know a large amount about fire, other than the fact that burns. There are many different aspects of fire. The first aspect is how fires ignite. This includes the elements need for fire to exist. Next, the next bit of information about fire is the stages of fire. There are four stages; these include ignition, growth, fully…

Micro Managing
The dictionary defines Micro Managing as- "To direct or control in a detailed, often meddlesome manner". To me that pretty well sums it up but lets break it down. Being detail oriented is usually not a bad thing as attention to detail sometimes makes a difference between a mediocre situation to an excellent one. Where is the line that denotes how far is too far? Have you ever driven an officer that is constantly telling you "Go left", "Slow down",…

I, like most of us here, received an email from the secret list (www.secretlist.com). It was discussing the brown-out situation in Boston. The following is a portion of the e-mail I received -
But it's a whole lot different now in Boston, MA.
Not surprisingly, defiant off-duty BFD Firefighters are intentionally disobeying BFD orders and voluntarily staffing 3 Boston fire companies that were closed this week as part of a new "brown out" policy aimed at reducing overtime…

Ok the story goes like this...We had a trailer fire Monday morning the 15Th at 4:30, well on the way there was reports of trapped animals. We had a crew go in on the back door and right when the walked in there were dead animals in the door way. When they went in a little more one of our female FF's spotted a dog on the floor still moving. She picked it up and it was still breathing, so she came out and put a nonrebreather on it and later it started breathing on it's own. Well come to find out…

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...March 13, 2009
Amazing things can happen on Friday the 13th. Since the last Friday the 13th, I've thought of the day as a good luck day. Today was one of those days.
It started by visiting a very kind penpal who lives nearby and who has an adopted son who is now grown-up. His situation was a bit different than ours, with our adoptions being private and hers through foster care. It's interesting how times have changed.
Next, I…

Fire instructors play a critical role in the development of firefighters. When the recruit begins training, their first exposure to the fire service is the instructor. That experience can often determine the firefighter’s view of training and future classes. Looking back through one’s career in the fire service, or life in general, it is easy to pinpoint teachers and instructors who have made a great impact. What were some of the characteristics of these instructors? What was it about them that…

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...November 6, 2008
I am writing this post from my kitchen laptop with sore shoulders right now. Yesterday was a two-fold day for me. It was my one year anniversary at my firehouse in Morris Township, NJ. It was also the day of my first live burn.
Since I did a vehicle burn on Monday I was anticipating a bigger fire, more instructions, and a tougher situation. I know you can't really compare a vehicle fire to a burn in a building, but when…
