Thought for the day

I dont have a lot to enter today... but heard this the other day and thought was worth sharing.........

A firefighter was working on the engine outside the station, when he noticed a little girl nearby in a little red wagon with little ladders hung off the sides, and a garden hose tightly coiled in the middle.

The girl was wearing a firefighter's helmet. The wagon was being pulled by her dog and her cat.

The firefighter walked over to take a closer look. 'That sure is a… Continue

Military

Military

The average age of the military man is 19 years. He

is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal

circumstances is considered by society as half man,

half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough

to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his country.

He never really cared much for work and he would rather

wax his own car than wash his father's; but he has never

collected unemployment either.

He's… Continue

Bright Lights, Big City: Fire-Based EMS

A decade ago it was accurate to consider large non-fire ems 9-1-1 services as the best examples of high performance systems, utilizing innovation and technology to improve both patient outcomes and system efficiency. Fire-based systems were struggling with unfilled paramedic positions, shot-gun mergers, and unsophisticated administrators.

Wake County (NC), SunStar (FL),… Continue

HYMN OF THE MUNICIPAL FIREFIGHTER

That dream that I as a child had to raise me the truck with siren

to dress in boots and helmet to me and to be the hero of that one scene

it has spent the time and I understand that dream that I had as a child

it is a gift that came to me from the sky to take care of the aid call

To be firefighter is to take in the veins the passion to help the brother,

although it risks my life in this way I will fight by tender to him the hand

although i be in conditions…

Wet n' Wild: Be Prepared for Dangers Associated with Swiftwater Rescues

By Greg Jakubowski

FireRescue Magazine

April showers may bring beautiful May flowers, but they can also create treacherous creek and river conditions, along with flash floods that generate emergency calls. These calls can range from nothing more than someone stuck in a vehicle that has become surrounded by relatively calm water to multiple people who have driven their vehicles into a flash-flooded area and are now unable to fight the fast-moving current to escape. What’s… Continue

Organizational Schizophrenia

Does your fire department or EMS system suffer from Organizational Schizophrenia?

Most career departments have at least three shifts or platoons. A 24-on/48-off shift schedule is fairly common. In this type of department, different shifts often do things in very different ways, based on the personalities of the firefighters, paramedics, and officers that gravitate to that shift. In departments with a Shift Commander position, each shift often mimics the shift commander's personality… Continue

We Are The Brotherhood!

We have all heard this phrase, but I wonder what does it truly mean to us. For me it is the core of being a firefighter and rising above the selfish mentality of what is in it for me. I've seen people in this service that are both dedicated and loyal to the mission. And I've also seen people that were loyal to themselves and themselves alone. It is imperitive that we stop and take a long look at ourselves and ask ourselves this question. What does the brotherhood mean to me?

As an… Continue

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...March 28, 2009

This has been a pretty quiet week, except for the structure fire at the beginning of the week where we provided mutual aid. I'd like to share with you an introspection about something different.

About five years ago I joined my company, RE/MAX Properties Unlimited, in Westfield, NJ. I remember distinctly taking the most humble seat in the corner. The reason I did this was because I left a company where I was the 'big fish in… Continue

Antarctica

So we’ve been here for 2 months now and things are finally coming together. It’s tough to jump straight in and do a job when everyone comes from a different style of fighting fire and different background. But we train a lot and are starting to come together as a department.

To give you some background on the department we are a full time 24 on 24 off crew with 12 during the austral winter (Feb – Aug) and around 50 during the summer. We run out of 1 station in town year round and a… Continue

For Love of the Job

I, like other fire service professionals, like to read about goings on in other parts of the country. It is always exciting and interesting to read about large, unique and dangerous events where our brothers and sisters were put into action and succeeded. This is especially true of daring rescues that are recorded and written about. After all, that is what most of us got into this business for anyway, right?

What I find interesting is that each and every time one of our own is interviewed… Continue

Hi Brothers and Sisters I haven't been on here much due to some trouble with my stepson and his, I don't know if its now ex fiance or what, and of course they both live with us, with thier newborn son, my grandson, and as of yesterday my stepson has been kicked out of the house for cheating on his fiance, and being very disrespectful of both me and my wife.
