Summer update

Howdy to all my Brothers and Sisters..Just wanted to write and give a sorta update. All things are pretty much as always we are up an down on being busy, I am still running in-house on a medic crew and run part-paid on call the rest of the time.As soon as our Department approves an agility test for in-house fire on days, I will more than likely take the test and go that direction. Doing so will probably mean I will have to drop the medic shift and possibly the part paid volley at night. My… Continue

the peripheral edge of the universe

Upsala, Ontario is in the boondocks, so sometimes things work out differently than in other places. With a humble nod to Paul Combs, who is a real artist, here is one of my attempts at cartoonery:

Okay, things aren't quite that different, but you get the idea. You can read more about what I call "the peripheral edge of the…

Aerial Apparatus Makes Swiftwater Rescue

Aerial Apparatus Makes Swiftwater Rescue

By Travis Boudrey

In late winter and early spring, the combination of weather conditions and human behavior can create a recipe for disaster, especially when roads with low crossings become flooded due to overflowing rivers and streams. Sometimes, as motorists approach these crossings, they seem to overestimate the ability of their automobile and underestimate the power of water. This serious…

How Dedicated to Serve Are You?

When you say we'll protect you and serve you, where do you draw the line? Does there have to be a fire? A medical emergency? Or just a genuine need for help when you have run out of places to go or people to turn to?

Another vent

As a third gen FF I have been around this business/life for a while and I hate to see what is happening to the job. Lawrence just whacked almost two dozen and is now down from 150 two years ago to around 72 personnel. Only have a population of about 80,000 and a history of arson. No big deal. I was reading in the local paper where the reporters only got a "no response" from the union president! Why?! Was he laid off too? If he wasn't fired, in the hospital or mostly dead somewhere then he… Continue

New Fire Safety Product for Construction Projects

I am interested in your professional feedback on a new fire safety product, The Mighty Safe Box (MSB). The MSB is designed to improve fire safety for construction projects. I am not a firefighter, rather a safety director and have worked with fire stations all across the country to prevent fires and would like the feedback from firefighting professionals, so Thanks in Advance.
