Drew

My heart sinks as the tones drop. I know it's something bad; I can feel it in the air.

"Station 1," the dispatcher begins, "respond to 852 Westbury Lane for an unresponsive male." I look around; it's just Drew and me. Everyone else is still at the hospital on another call. Panicked, I pick up the radio.

"Station 1, central."

"Go ahead Station 1."

"Medic 1 will be en route; requesting ALS."

"10-4, Station 1."

As Drew starts the medic, I hear dispatch tone out for… Continue

Think. It's 2008

"SCREW YOUR HEAD ON KNUCKLEHEADs AND THINK ABOUT

WHAT RISKS WE DO HAVE TO TAKE AS FIREFIGHTERS....

...AND THE ONES WE DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE" !

So....at the risk of over-simplifying the FIREFIGHTER SURVIVAL issue...

...here are 12 thoughts that might just work:

1-If we recruit, hire and promote the best possible people with strict and tough hiring standards and very tough and…

Reported structure fire....err

Apparently called in by a passer by visiting from out of town, from way down south, and had never seen a dryer vent put off steam in the winter time in the northeast US. Luckily it was just that. The building in which it was reported is a very large and old(at least 100 years old)home converted into 3 apartments, with many additions, remodeling jobs, paper thin walls, drop ceilings, balloon construction, etc... It would have been one hell of a mess had it been an actual structure… Continue

Thank goodness the fire truck is smarter than I am.

We started off our day with the usual routine- check the truck, make fun of the new guy, drink about ten cups of coffee (ok, I'm not that bad about it- maybe only three). So we had a public education program at one of the local pre-schools.

No big deal; make the new guy dress up, teach the kids some fire safety, show them the truck, and let them 'flow' a small forestry line. One of my firefighters stayed with me outside and we proceded to show off our tools and cool stuff to…

Firefighter/Lawyer ?

I once ran in an Engine Company where a Firefighter was studying law at a local university. His name was John and he was a good pipeman. John came to a point in his studies where the University allowed the pre law students to assist poor people in traffic court. They were not paid but were there to gain experience. John told me he was assigned to defend a crotchity old black man who had ben caught going 30 mph in a 25 mph zone. The old man was under the assumption the city had given him a… Continue

Firefighter Gifts: The Rookies Put Out The Fire

Becoming a firefighter means serving your time as a rookie.

Serving as the Captain of a fire department means training rookies to become firefighters. How do you know when they have gone from rookie to firefighter? Are they a fire fighter when they pass FFI, or is it when they come off "proby" or probationary status. When the time set by your department is up, say a year, are they no longer a rookie then? Is it when they put on their navy blue firefighter t-shirts or car plaque on…

So i messed up....i think

We got toned out at 1545 for a possible structure fire ma to lake shore for our ladder truck, first chief on scene reported smoke showing, i am proud to say out in 5 on scene in 10 but thats besides the point, our orders were to ladder the a and b side of the building the house was a two story wood frame construction so we grabed our 24' ladder and put it on the a side and then i said lets grab the 35' 2 fly ladder (only two of us were doing ladders the other three were taking windows) we… Continue

The Continuing Chronicles of the FNG(irl): The Interview (no bacon this time)

Tell you what, I'll save all of you the trouble and say it myself....

I'm a jackass.

There. Everyone happy?

I spent the better part of the day yesterday semi-obsessing, stressing and second-guessing about my interview. I changed clothes twice after work (I didn't want to come across as too business-like, but I didn't want to be sloppy or look too girly) and spent ten minutes alternately putting my hair up and then taking it back down again (who does this??? Oh, only…

Hilton Head/Bluffton Township Regional US&R Response Team Drill in the news!

In a departure from my normal blog where I make observations on leadership, the human condition (?), or just the things I find amusing, I wanted to share a news article about a group of which I am very proud, our regional US&R response team. Some members of the team are also loyal Nation participants and I wanted to publicly declare my congratualtions for a job well done.

In South Carolina we have one…

The state of EMS

I have recently commented on a post on this site that has to do with whether volunteer departments should be doing rescues. A thread off that discussion led to talk about how different neighboring agencies compete for incidents. Where normally, I think, competition is a good thing but this gets rather heated and sometimes to the detriment of the public. I sited a particular incident I "witnessed" which I won't go into detail(if you want the details, check out the post I mentioned earlier) but… Continue
