We got toned out at 1545 for a possible structure fire ma to lake shore for our ladder truck, first chief on scene reported smoke showing, i am proud to say out in 5 on scene in 10 but thats besides the point, our orders were to ladder the a and b side of the building the house was a two story wood frame construction so we grabed our 24' ladder and put it on the a side and then i said lets grab the 35' 2 fly ladder (only two of us were doing ladders the other three were taking windows) we started to set it up and then it fell whops, our chief told me we should have grabed the 18' ladder instead i told him better to have more than less. So what woud you have done.

I probably would have gone to another engine and took another 24' to place. Like Bruce said, it depends on the house and a few other issues, but my first instinct would be another 24.

Hey, live and learn...we all "mess-up" sometimes...As for Bruce's comment....that comment is a good way to face insubordination charges....Like it or not...the Chief IS the Chief...He is the boss (at least as far as the fire business is concerned)....Stay safe.......Paul

It would have all depended on the actual size of the house when i seen it but most times we dont mess with the smaller ladders we use them strictly for roof ladders so prolly would have been using the 35' also all i can tell you is chief dont like the way you do it especcially when no direct instruction was given as to a size to use i say if the chief dont like the way u do it he can always do it himself
