End of the line

April 2012 ,

I am officially retired from Wilson County EMA . I will miss the job , some of the people I've worked with and some,  I hope to never hear from again . I have spent 28 + years with most of them , some of them have been to my home ,broke bread with my wife ,son and I  , and most of those have never asked us to visit them . And yet , I was willing to risk everything to be there to back them up , such is life I guess . I look forward to Volunteering with the Baptist…

by: Lou Angeli

The Best Nutrition Advice for Firefighters

Today I wanted to piggy-back on my post about inflammation and heart disease (keep the comments and emails coming).  I know that in health and fitness sometimes the best results are obtained from the simplest advice.  So here goes, in my opinion the absolute best thing you can do to lose weight, get healthy, or live a life full of energy is to eat by this ONE RULE:…

Qualification substituted by experince

Good day to all. I'm a Firefighter from tthe Philippines and i'm considering to work abroad as a firefighter. Does anyone have an idea if my certification as an ARFF by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines and 3years experience would qualify me as an ARFF abroad or can it substitute IFSAC or ProBoard requirements?

Propane Response

At the firehouse I work at, the volunteer chief has decided on a procedure to mitigate a leaking 20 lb. propane cylinder.

When you arrive on scene and size up that you have a 20 lb. propane cylinder that's releasing gas from it's burst disc (not a pressure relief that we all think it has).  Next, find a trash can and fill it half way or so with water and turn the cylinder upside down in to the trash can of water.  The theory with doing it this way is that the liquid pushes to…

Should fire stations be used as neighborhood health clinics?

{EAV:91eb730b953484de}

The fire chief of my old department has ventured forward with a new mission for the fire service. He is trying out a notion of using fire stations and firefighters as neighborhood health clinics.

The idea is that in some neighborhoods during specific and limited hours citizens can come by their local firehouse and have some simple health checks preformed by a combination of firefighters and volunteer health…

Ruling: Rescue Vehicle Staffing Too Low

Wilmington's Squad Concept Violates Contract's Minimum Staffing

by: Lou Angeli

Wilmington, DE (May, 7, 2012) -- A court appointed arbitrator has ruled that the City of Wilmington violated its contract with the city's firefighters when the Fire Department introduced the Squad Concept on January 1, 2011. At that time, the Fire Department…

life

Things would not be so hard if not for the people that are constantly posting on facebook and placing flowers on what they are referring to as the "crash site" as if it were a alien encounter or something. Unfortunately I can see the location everytime I leave the driveway.

Japanese firefighter LODD story

This happened 30 years ago today.(5.5.1982)

Manabu Sato-Tokyo fire department firefighter- dispatched on the scene.

He managed to go to victims on the seventh floor and he protected the victims with his body against fire.

After the victims rode a lifter of an aerial ladder, he let it go.

Because he worried overweight.

So he grabbed another…

A prayer for a young Firefighter who passed away today...

R.I.P. Kyle McGetrick

A Fire Fighter passed away in Barnegat today. He wasnt the prototypical Fire Fighter. In fact he was just a young boy, far too young to leave this world. This Fire Fighter wasnt very big in stature, but took the words Courage and Bravery to a whole new level. Today Kyle kissed the face of God when he passed away. He is now an Angel, who will be remembered for not how he passed away, but how he lived. I know the special Fire Fighter section of…
