Although the temps here in the Mo Bootheel have moderated some they are still dangerous. Last nite my son-in-law, who is on our FD and a rural one, got too hot and collapsed. EMS was called and transported him to the hospital. Fortuanately he is OK. He was on a fire out in the county with the rural department. Only four showed up to help and Daniel did most of the work as much I can determine. It was structure fire in an abandoned school in a small community. Daniel packed up with another FF…

If you don't know the name Billy Goldfeder, you should. He is one of the most outspoken advocates of firefighter safety and survival out there. His name is all over Firehouse.com and the magazine, he is a regular instructor at FDIC, and his web-page Firefighterclosecalls.com is a "must read" for anybody that cares about this job enough to want to keep doing it for many years.
Chief Goldfeder is in town for the IAFC conference…

One particularly cold and cloudy Friday evening in October, I find myself sitting in the training room of Clearview Volunteer Rescue Squad with my best friend Olivia. We grab a seat near the front, being the eager students we are, and carefully lay out our pens and paper. One light flickers incessantly in the corner, giving the already dim room lighting worthy of a B-list horror flick. I look around the room, and I am surprised to find that other than one instructor, Liv and I are the only…

Check out our union web site.
Get to know our little department.
www.fitchburgfirefighters3128.org
We've had the finance bug hit us the past few years. Our manpwer has dropped from 113 to 84. instead of 5 engines and three ladders we now run three engines one ladder and a rescue.

When I walk into the bland beige building of the Clearview Rescue Squad for the first time, I calmly hold out my hand and say "My name is Samantha Montgomery, and I'm here to interview for a position on the squad." The man to whom I am speaking peers down at me over his huge, square glasses and says, "so it's Sam, then?" I must look confused, because he straightens up and repeats, "It's Sam. You can't possibly think that you'll get any respect with a name like Samantha," he trails off and then…

...I figured it's time to fan the old flames of apathy again. Here we sit, years again after another disaster, and have we learned our lessons? All of the complaining about how the fire service isn't taken seriously enough and where am I gonna get funding and all that. How much has changed since the last little fit thrown by Mother Nature and what have we learned? We got a great best-seller in Hurricane Katrina Lessons…

As Firefighters everywhere, especially in NYC grieve the horrific Line of Duty Deaths of FDNY Firefighters Joseph Graffagnino and Robert Beddia from E-24/L-5 yesterday, it is hard to not see the terrorist murders of 9/11 again extending to the loss of these two Firefighters. FF Beddia, 53, had been a Firefighter for 23 years; FF Graffagnino, 33, had been with the FDNY for eight years...both were trapped and ran out of air.
The building is a "war torn" reminder that the USA was…

I am a Fireman's Wife
The table's set, the meal's prepared,
and our guests will soon arrive.
My Husband once more disappears,
with the hope of keeping a child alive.
While waiting at home alone,
our plans have gone awry.
My first response is to
sit right down and cry.
But soon again I realize
the importance of my life,
When I agreed to take on the…
