Innovative Recruit Training: How Anne Arundel County made it happen

By Michael E. Cox, Jr.

Training a large number of career recruit firefighters can be a daunting task for any department; however, when a department is faced with a skyrocketing number of vacancies due to attrition, increased overtime costs, a year-long delay in the hiring process, plus one of the worst economic downturns since the Great Depression, the difficulty level of such an undertaking grows exponentially.

In November 2008, Anne Arundel County Executive John…

I fell in love with another girl last night.

My family hasn't had a new baby in 26 years. So I never knew what it was like to be around a baby as an adult. This past summer my nephew and niece both had babies. My nephew had twin girls, My niece had a boy about a month apart. It was love at first sight they melted my heart. Last night one of the girls looked at me and smiled and started talking baby talk to me. Well she won me over big time, it was one of those moments I will never forget.

I have lost alot of family in the last…

Six Weeks and Counting.

Well these past few weeks have proven to be exhausting for Eric as well as myself. It is insane that we are now in week 6. It is going much faster then I would have imagined. It is nice to see him happy and smiling and knowing that he has finally found the job that he has been searching for , for a long time.

Going through this academy is something that I was often sure would end our marriage, being as it is that we are going through some other personal things. I didn't think…

GIS: The tool you can't afford to overlook

By Joseph A. Masington & Guy Seeley

Today’s challenging economic climate has had a substantial impact on fire services across the country, forcing many communities to slash budgets, and forcing even the most fiscally minded fire department leaders to make tough choices regarding available resources, from closing fire stations on a rolling or permanent basis to reducing the number of firefighters on duty during a given shift.

As a result, the amount of…

The first all-nighter in a long while...

Last night, I had my anthropology class at the college. I dropped my son off at the YMCA at 5:30 PM and headed over. I knew there were some storms rolling in, but didn’t think it would be that bad. It started raining horribly at around 8:00 PM. My station got dispatched to a building fire which actually turned out to be nothing, so they were eventually recalled.

I left school at 9:40 PM. At around 10:00 PM, I got in the house, kissed my wife and opened up my laptop to start…
