Rolling stops vs. complete stops

We were up in the Adirondacks this past week at the Au Sable Forks Fire Department giving the FASNY "CSI, New York: Crash Scene Investigation" seminar. Little did we know we'd be competing with a forest fire for attendees, but the group was enthusiastic, attentive, and asked some great questions.

One item that came up for discussion during the break was whether it's better to come to a complete stop at a dicey intersection or just slow to a rolling stop? The recommended course of…

I love firefighting!

I love fighting fires one because its a rush when than pager goes off the adrenalin gets pumping i get to turn the lights and sirens on in my car and haul ass through town. then get to the station and haul ass some more in the truck. Then you get to the fire and you have this beast that you have to extinguish i tell you there is no better rush in life than that!!!

Fire House in South Carolina Catches Fire

BISHOPVILLE, SC (WIS) - A fire station caught on fire Tuesday night. It happened in the small town of Bishopville. The fast response of Lee County firefighters and emergency workers helped avoid a total loss.

Lt. Brian Eargle says, "It's obvious no one is safe from fire. It can happen to anyone at anytime. Fire - it doesn't care who it picks."

Lt. Eargle takes WIS News 10's Angie Goff through the damaged building. In one blackened…

Caught a working fire right next door

I was working late yesterday (as I usually do) at the fire academy and overheard Forks Fire Department (Cheektowaga NY) get banged out for a working fire. Their station is right across the street so I could hear the apparatus sirens winding up and then stopping abruptly shortly thereafter.

I missed the dispatcher give the address so I stepped outside to take a look. What I saw was the sky filling with thick black smoke and a raging fire right next door to our fire academy.

I…

Where have all the volunteers gone?

A lot of people today say they don't have the time to respond to "the typical false alarm"

10 years ago their wives were waiting at the station because their…

The Creed of the Sociopathic Obsessive Compulsive Fire Captain

1. If any thing can go wrong, fix it! To hell with Murphy!

2. When given a choice- take both!

3. Multiple projects lead to multiple successes.

4. Start at the top then work your way up

5. Do it by the book, but be the author!

6. When forced to compromise, ask for more.

7. If you can't beat them, join them, then beat them.

8. If its worth doing, its got to be done right now.

9. if you can't win, change the rules.

10. If you can't…

THE FIREMAN

THE FIREMAN

In Phoenix, Arizona, a 26-year-old mother stared down at her 6 year old son, who was dying

of terminal leukemia. Although her heart was filled with sadness, she

also had a strong feeling of determination. Like any parent, she wanted

her son to grow up and fulfill all his dreams. Now that was no longer

possible.. The leukemia would see to that. But she still wanted her

son's dreams to come true. She took her son's hand…

Don't wait to tell your friends how much fun they are, or how much you enjoy being around them. It may be too late.
