Then & Now: The truth about Charleston from the last officer outBy Cindy Devone-PachecoAs many departments across the country know all too well, the effects of a line-of-duty death (LODD) are deeply felt, long lasting and far reaching. Firefighters and civilians alike who were alive on 9/11 will forever be able to recall precisely where they were when they heard that two planes had flown into the World Trade Center buildings.
Of course, 9/11…

My daughter came to me about a year ago and told me she had written a poem. Knowing she was only 3 yrs old and had just mastered writing her alphabet I knew it would have been a miraculous achievement if she had actually written anything on paper besides the usual smiley faces and scribbled flowers. To my amazement she had not put it on paper; she had made up this poem in her head and had said it so…

The recent release of the
NIOSH Investigation Report #F2007-28 detailing the deaths of a Captain Matt Burton and Engineer Scott Desmond of the Contra Costa County (CA) Fire Protection District is unquestionably a wake-up call for us all. The loss of two experienced firefighters in a structure encompassing less than 1000 square feet is proof that no incident, regardless of size, cannot be taken lightly.

The recent
double-LODD in West Virginia has mobile home fires on all of our minds. Although it’s too soon for us to know what happened at that specific fire, or to draw any judgments about the tactics employed, it does provide an opportunity to review mobile home firefighting tactics. While our hearts go out to the families of Johnnie Hammons and Timothy Nicholas, our minds should turn to how we can…

I am sitting here feeling very sad over the LODD of Ray Barrett who was killed when the truck he was responding to a motor vehicle crash in rolled off the road yesterday just north of Hicks Bay at Waihau Bay.
Of even more concern for me is that the 30 year old truck involved, a
Bedford MK65 is the same as what my
unit is running.
Having seen some…

We live in a society that has changed dramatically from what our parents and grandparents knew. They lived through the Great Depression. We didn't. They knew how to do a lot of work with a little machinery and a lot of poorly-paid or unpaid manpower. We have to do the same amount of work with a little more machinery, fewer but slightly better-paid manpower, or fewer numbers of unpaid manpower. They knew how to re-use simple items until they wore out or broke beyond repair. They returned glass…

Several weeks ago I returned home after working one of the firefighter fatalities that had occurred over the 4th of July weekend. I have needed some time to regroup and to rest after this one. Over the many years that I have been running the TX Line of Duty Death Task Force, I have adjusted many American flags that drape the caskets of the fallen, I have held the hands of countless families as they grieved the loss of their loved ones, and I…

Most civilians would have never known what is involved in a fire or police funeral when a public servant is killed in the line of duty until 9/11 happened. Once the funerals and memorials started for those FDNY and NYPD fallen members, images of flag draped caskets, long processions of fire trucks and police cars, and crisply dressed uniformed personnel were flashed up on TV screens across the country and around…

I attended the funeral for Riley Joesph Terrebone Jr. this weekend. The attendanced was fantastic, attendence, by local, pd, sheriffs office, ems, state pd, and local and some nonlocal fire departments. There is a difference between attending a funeral and helping with setup and organization. FF just don't need to show up to the visitation and funeral, but before to help organize the setup for the prossession, and gravesite attivities. This is when we should come together to help out.
