Midnight Calls

I'm embarrassed to say that the other night I slept through a call. Does anyone have any tips to wake up easier for middle of the night calls?

DON’T LOOK NOW, BUT SOMEONE BROKE THE COOKIE CUTTER on BACKSTEP FIREFIGHTER.COM

Not sure it ever worked in the first place

DMVFirePhoto

We are in a fascinating period of time for the fire service.  Never before have the resources (financial, physical and mental) been greater.  We are finally looking at fires, how they burn, how conditions change.  We are looking a fuel packages, flow paths.  We are discussing heat release rates and polar…

Cairns New Yorker leather helmet HELP

I recently went from a Cairns 1010, to a Cairns New Yorker leather N5A, made in 1987. Size medium. The helmet was a little big so I had adjusted it to the smallest it can go, but it was still a little loose. So, I ordered some foam adjustments and placed them in the play spots, and with my flash hood on the helmet fits perfectly. But, the problem I'm having, is when I have a mask on, the helmet fits all nice and snug & whatnot, but because of the mask, the helmet sits just a little higher,… Continue

a memo written by a 9 year old : firefighter hero

My son recently wrote this please feel free to pay it forward.  By the way, he is only 9.

Firefighter Hero

My dad inspires me. He is brave because he  saves lives everyday.

He would rather crash his car than let an innocent pass on.( I think we know what he is saying here)

My Dad is gentle. He calms people down and says everything is going to be ok.

My dad is talented. He is so tiny he can fit threw a one foot pipe. He will help you wherever you are. He…

10 Simple Rules For Fat Loss (2014 Edition)

Would you agree that a leaner athlete is a better athlete?  I know this is a "loaded" question.  A lot of the answer has to deal with the sport in which the athlete is participating.  One thing that research shows is that a leaner athlete is a "more efficient" athlete.  When it comes to firefighters, this is a valid finding.  Efficiency in general terms, describes the…

HazMat/WMD - making sense of scents

HazMat Situational Awareness – Making sense of scent

It is not that we as hazmatters want to smell a chemical agent but that we as professionals better know what it smells like. Besides PPE problems such as suit breakthrough or poorly fitting mask another good reason to have an idea of the scents that are associated with the bad stuff is the valuable information we receive from our witnesses/victims.

Understanding witness statements can be a vital key to helping us safely solve… Continue

Blowin' Smoke with Kevin Shea

ModelCityFirefighter.com’s newest article of Blowin’ Smoke features Kevin Shea, a retired firefighter from FDNY. We are very excited about this Blowin’ Smoke article and grateful for the opportunity to interview Shea on the site. I had the pleasure of meeting him earlier this year in Chicago at Fire Rescue International. He is about as humble as they come and is a wealth of knowledge. We hope you enjoy the interview.

Is a police and firefighter hiring recovery underway

After several years of dormant or non-existent hiring in public safety is there a recovery underway? Are cities, counties, state and federal agencies moving back to pre-recession staff levels? In past reports we highlighted that we saw as a slow but steady increase in the new recruit academies. Reports that departments were holding off…

Maps and Communication training for new employees.

Does anyone have a policy and/or training material on maps and communications for new employees. This is a concern of mine as the chief. I want to make sure that we offer our responders the best and most up to date training available. What I would really like to have is a classroom presentation that has been put together and used with success. We have people within our agency that teach, but every class seems to be different and we need a program that is consistent. I'd love to see what…

It's that time of year again.

The holiday season has begun for some of us it is colder than the look you see in a black Friday shopper's eye when they are told the products they wanted are sold out. It is also the weekend leading up to the fire dept's Christmas dinner. A time food, family, and awards. This has been a long standing tradition with good awards and not so good awards. Last year I hit a deer with our light rescue needless to say I got a couple. This year I am handing some out for the first time. I will admit…

Yes, Collinwood (1908) and Our Lady of Angels (1958) happened a long time ago, but in May 2012, three teenage boys mimicked a youtube.com video and set fire to hand sanitizer on a desktop in a Woodburn High Schoolcomputer room and tried to put it out with paper…
