hi my name is chip i am new to the fire service. i joined the the dept
for a few reasons my grandfather was the chief of my dept so i grew up
in the dept. both of my brothers became firefighters when they turned 18, so any info i can get would be great. thank you and be safe

Just in case some don't know, but there is a thread running in "general firefighting" that I believe will be beneficial to those just getting started in the fire service and probies/jr's/explorers are encouraged to participate. It's called "Let's Play Jeopardy". It's full of learning information in a fun setting. Please come and join the fun and see if you can stump the veterans. It is great learning if you are seriousely interested in the fire service. And even if you are the quiet type, just go and read and fallow along. I guarentee you will learn something. Always fun to test your knowledge. See you there.

Ethan, just practice practice practice. You'll learn your own way to gear up quicker each time. And yeah michael I agree with Justin. Just always be observing what they're going. And pick their brains. If they're a lot like the "black hats" at my dept, they are pretty standoffish but they love answering questions and it will show them you're interested in what they have to say and that you're wanting to learn. Which will start building more trust. Stay safe!

michael, something that helped me get ahead was to talk to some of the veteran guys on the dept. listen to what they have to say and just ask questions.
