Fire Or EMS Station Warning Signs
Everyone would know what is being discussed here. The yellow diamond warning sign that is placed just far enough to warn the unaware motorist that there is a fire or ems station ahead. For years the sign had letters to say fire station or rescue squad. Then someone thought someone may not know how to read whats on the sign so use something that looks like a fire engine or a symbol to represent the type of station is ahead.
Now today the symbol looks like a old style fire engine. The open cab type with a figure wearing a fire helmet and a ladder riding high on the body. Now we don't ride open cab fire engines today so should a modern fire engine be used on the warning sign? A closed cab with maybe two figures wearing helmets in the windows?
Rescue squad or EMS station signs, most today would have a Star Of Life and still have Rescue Squad on it. Some locations just put up a fire station sign than put up a special sign. Would a symbol of a ambulance with a Star Of Life work?

the SOL is recognized but in my travels i have seen rescue squad houses marked with the old red cross "emergency first aid" sign. It is my understanding that the red cross has a patent on the red cross and is picky on who gets to use it. perhaps you are on to something because where i am in florida the county made up a simple sign, perhaps you should create and patent it...before i do

I say leave things as is, because what does it truly matter? All the sign is, is a warning that emergency vehicles may be pulling out up ahead. I personally see no reason to change current markings and even replacing signs. I see that as an unnecessary and undue cost for taxpayers and that such money could be allocated for more important things.

NEWS FLASH! People don't care.
The old timey fire truck signs with flashing lights which are triggered when we leave the station do absolutely nothing. They are not even noticed by the travelling public. They continue on their merry little way, oblivious to anything but their own little world.

Gotta agree with you there Oldman people are too busy to pay attention to those bothersome signs
heck we have a hard enough time getting peple to pull over as it is! Too much of an inconvenience
unless it's their house we're headed to...

The only solution our county did for our station is that it sits in a school zone. We have a elementary and middle school across from our station. The compliants to the county about the safety of the children to and from the schools and people that were killed because of the speed of the cars through the zone made the decision put in speed sensor signs and a fire station traffic sign that we activate to leave the station. We smack a button on the wall and the light changes from flashing to all red stop, but that wouldn't stop them. Some would just drive through because nothing was coming out in front of them. Some would stop and wait until the light changed back to flashing or someone waved them on.
Now the only thing that slows down the traffic to within a safe speed are the two mobile speed camera trailers. One across the street and the other on the station parking lot.
The only thing is the fire apparatus getting caught on the speed cameras. Also in our area are red light camears at traffic lights and we have gotten notices from the county about them.
One thing about the signs I have seen some stations will customize their signs. Put station numbers on them or add something of their own ideas on them. There are many sign companies that some stations will make deals with for what they want.

If you read what the county did to where my station is located or Oldman's , did your station or local government improve on use of your station sign. Add warning lights or maybe paint lines on the street.
One station in our area had the state step in and put up signs and flashing lights and painted lines in front of the station to keep traffic from blocking the station when the traffic light at the corner stops the traffic passing the station and backs up to in front of the station.
Our sub station had the same problems because there was a big park at the end of the road where it sits. Every weekend the traffic would backup from the traffic light to in front of the station. The county never added anything to help. The signs you got to check to see if the weeds haven't grown up in front of one of them or the other doesn't get lost with all the commercial signage across the street.
