ashfire replied to Chris Kennedy's discussion Why is a firehouse called a firehouse?
"How about the word warehouse where wares are stored or maybe where wares are sold.  I have also heard of people using the word barn as in Fire Barn for storage of fire equipment."

Rural Ladder Trucks

I have seen a discussion about ladders or quints  in rural areas posted 2008. A recent news article I seen of a area where my mother's family lives that had a major fire. The only ladder or tower ladder was in the county seat  where the fire was and they had to get a ladder from another major area of the state an hour away to assist along with engines from the surrounding area of the county. Then where part of my family lives is a rural mountain area with a major interstate highway through it ,…See More

Fire Station Dogs or Pets: Service/Therapy Animals or Nuance?

Being part of a combination county fire service, we have a appointed fire chief and staff to control the operations. They are involved in creating General Orders for all to operate under. Just lately a GO came out about fire station dogs or pets in the stations. If the station has a animal it has to be a service or therapy animal and all info concerning it. Now most of the stations that have a dog or pet are volunteer fire companies or stations with a combination staff. Many are taking offense…See More

Are Parades Still A Need?

A few years ago our county was having its county convention and bad weather rolled in that morning and the parade was cancelled. This year since none of the member depts. wanted to host the convention, the county association took over to find places to host the events that would be part of the convention, but a parade would not be part of the convention this year. A car and motorcycle show would be part of the convention which would mean find a parking lot to setup and place vehicles to be…See More

Citizen Support Groups

Most volunteer departments usually look for new recruits to join their department if they are citizens but how many department would allow citizens to form a group to support their efforts that does not require them to be emergency providers. Fire Corps has been one type of group that have many tasks they could do for a department from apparatus cleaning or repair, raising funds, and helping with paperwork etc.. At one time I heard of a group of citizens that wanted to help a department by…See More

Fire and Security Protection In Fire Stations

A recent fire in a fire station in North Carolina resulted in loss of a building and fire apparatus. You have to wonder, should there a NFPA requirement for systems to protection the building and apparatus within? Most new fire stations are having sprinklers systems built in as the buildings go up or in areas where they are required by law for new construction. Should they be required in buildings that have stood for time or in areas where sprinkler or other protections systems have not been…See More

Anyone That Lives In Georgia Or Hunts For Old Fire Apparatus?

Posted on June 28, 2009 at 9:30am 0 Comments

I am trying to find a old fire unit that belonged to the Ambrose Fire Department in Coffee County.

Its a 1967 Ford F500 4x4 open cab brush and rescue combo built by the Young Fire Apparatus Company. The unit has bench seating where a hose bed would be.

The unit was built for the Allentown Road Volunteer Fire Dept and used by the department from 1967 until 1971 and sold to a fire dept in Pennsylvania which later sold the unit to Ambrose. I have heard that the unit was put out of… Continue

Thanks for replying to my blog regarding Auxiliary Information. What I am looking for is, our Department currently has three status' for membership, Active FF, Associate FF and Administrative Members. Because we have them set up this way our Admin members are required to do some training activities. We have a very limited roster of FFs, I am currently the Fire Police for the department. We had a gentlemen approach the department wanting to be a member to only perform Fire Police duties, so it would prevent me from having to direct traffic and then I could use my skills and training to actually fight fire or provide patient care.

He also helps out a couple of the other departments in the area with traffic control and photography. We were told that if we wrote a short amendment to our Constitution adding an Auxiliary membership status that we could put our Fire Police under that and they wouldn't be held to the training standards like our Active FFs or Admin members.

I am sure I have rambled a little but I have been having a difficult time trying to figure out how to word it for our Constitution. I just have way too many things going on. LOL

Thanks again for offering your advice. TCSS ~Tammy~

Ashfire, welcome to the FF Nation. I am glad you dropped in to join the group. Another Oregon Firefighter here is great. Dont be shy. There is lots to do, read and be involved with. Your participation and involvement is important to us all. Takes a bit to kinda figure it all out but you will be glad you did. Have fun and look around.
