If your department will do any kind of formation drills -- parade marching, standing at formation during presentation of colors, etc., and would be willing to put time in to practice those maneuvers, a stripe on the pants leg provides a stunning visual display... IF you can get everyone walking in step, executing at the same time.  It can be very impressive (look at bands from the US Marine Corps Band to a good high school marching band.)  However, if you're going to be doing formation type drills, but NOT spend the time to get everyone in step with each other, a leg stripe will very sharply announce that to everyone.

If you don't foresee any type of standing @ attention or formation marching, then it's less important and a matter of personal choice.

We wear double breasted coats and do have a stripe on the pants leg as well as around the sleeve cuff of the coats.

At our department, the Officers have double breasted jackets and white shirts with their appropriate gold bugle collar devices and gold stripes on their sleaves while the firemen have single breasted jackets and light blue shirts. The Officers also wear gold badges on their shirts and jackets while the firemen wear silver badges.

The officers and fireman wear the same type of hat except the Officer's hat is white with the appropriate gold badge while the firemen wear a standard blue hat with a silver badge.

As far as the stripe on the pants, only our Honor Gaurd members have a red stripe on their pants regardless of rank as well as a red braided cord on their right shoulder.

We looked at both single and double breasted coats when we bought ours. The double breasted jackets looked good but didn't seem to fit everyone the same. If you have people of varying levels of fitness and females, the single breasted jackets may look better on everyone. We skipped the stripe down the pant legs as most departments in our area only use them for honor guard members. Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply's. There are to many options i'm finding out but i think i'm getting close to what to order. When i ask anyone  at the firehouse they say just pick it out and that is what we get. So i have a friend that does a lot of sewing so i'm having her make up a pink suit for the chief then we will see what the response is.
