I was just curious as to what ideas other departments come up with for training on skills when they don't have props or facilities to work with. I'm talking about skills like LPG fires, forcible entry, specialized RIT/rescues and so on.
Stay safe!

I am in a very similiar situation and for the training topics that we do not have props or facilities for we have to rely on videos to help demonstrate procedures until we can get the "hands on" training that the proper props and facilities provide. Also, we can sometimes afford to send 1 or 2 members to a "hands on" class and then they bring back the information and present it to the department.
Your are only limited by your own imagination.
LPG: Someone in your first in services and sells these containers and gas. They need to get training, go along with them, or better yet, invite the company to your town, go to a safe location and train, train, train...
Forcible Entry: MVA after affects end up in junkyards, we all have them. There's your source. Go train, train, train...
Fire Extinguishers: Whoever uses more extinguishers, like schools or businesses, coordinate when the business is getting their extinguishers serviced, so firefighters and employees can discharge the extinguishers, using up the fire retardant that is going to be replaced anyway. It's a win / win scenario. And yes, it's "training", so train, train, train...
Rescues: Make your own props, don't reinvent the wheel, look stuff up on the internet and come up with specific prop ideas, presenting them here on the FFN, verses such a broad brushed question that most folks are going to shine on, unless they are special sweet people like Shareef and myself... Just sayin'
Needless to say, my message here is for you to... train, train, train... :D lol

Good stuff guys. I wasn't looking for info for my department to use so much as what kind of ways to train and props have others thought up to make up for not having all the easily accesible resources. I probably didn't word the intro quite right. Sorry.
Mike you do have some good ideas there though. I'm working with the training officer and we are going to build an LPG prop that we can hook up to a 5 gal tank.
We also have a company we can get extinguishers from that are either outdated or going in for testing that we can use for training then just have to return.
I also have found some good training props to build and am trying to get some money from the budget to build them.
I appreciate the input guys but I was wondering what your departments have come up with to use but good input. Thanks.
Sensory deprivation training: Dark rooms...identify sounds...identify objects by touch only...identify direction of sound...crew-level communication without speech...
The Cold Lake Fire Rescue has a small training ground where we set up our own props. One of the volunteers was a construction company owner and would train new workers be building props for the fire dept. to use for different skills. The hardest we had was and is LPG training, Imperial Oil Resources however would on occasion let us use their facility for such training as well as our high angle rescue training, which was also done at the local ski hill utilizing the the chair lifts. Before these areas were made available to the dept. we would have to send members 1 1/2 hours away to the Alberta Fire Training School in Vermilion Alberta for training. For high angle would require a 3 hour trip to Edmonton to train with Edmonton Fire Rescue.
How did your dept use the chair lifts with high angle rescue training?
We would climb them and do mock rescues from the lift as if it was stuck mid point. There are pictures in my photo album of myself and others from the dept. training on them.
Sounds like a blast!
