Eating Out On-Duty?
Just Curious what's your Departments rules about eating out while on duty meaning actually sitting down and eating.

At my paid department we can go out to eat as long as everyone on the truck agrees to the same place ( we run 5 man Engines, 4 man Ladders, and 4 man Rescue companies.) However we have to wear a Class A shirt and no hats. The only time this doesn't apply is if we are out training or have been out on a call. The BCs. monitor this very close so there is no rules fudged on. The place we eat at has to be in our primary district no second in districts. At my vol. department it is allowed as long as it is in town.

On the volunteer EMS department we eat out if we take a transport that causes us to miss a meal. So, if we go to Wichita, which is three hours away, you can be sure a meal is missed! We just decide amongst us where we want to go, and the county reimburses us the cost!
On the volunteer fire department we are lucky if the support truck makes it out with crackers and gatorade.

I volunteer for a city fire dept. and we used to be able to go out on Fridays only but now due to the budget being frozen we can't go out to eat. Hopefully it will change soon cause I know everybody enjotys going out.

Depends on the shift, one shift crews are allowed, two are not. That's life.

We can go in and pick up our food, take it back to the station and eat, but we cannot sit in a restaurant, take out or otherwise and eat. Hell, the "good citizens" of this city feel it necessary to complain when we go to the grocery store, I couldn't imagine if they actually saw us sitting to eat. lol

When I was paid we could go out to eat but no more than 5 mins. away from our district. Made it kinda hard for the south station as the only place we could go there was a bar down the road. Usually someone went POV to get the food there. Sometimes we would just have pizza delivered.

On my volly department we can go out if you have two people in the truck. You also have to be in uniform, the local mexican palce will give us a free meal if we are in uniform and drive atruck down. I think its a good thing, if someone is out in the truck eating we have at least two people responding.

Hey Rafter Rat, I saw your comment on going out to eat. Do you guys have a written policy and if so, could I get a copy of it? We have a new Chief and they said if we could come up with a written policy, they would look at it and see if we can go out to eat ( sit down). Presently we are not allowed to even pick up food unless we are returning from a run. Thanks Capt. Condina

We are allowed to go out to eat assuming everyone decided to eat at the same place, we have our class As on, and the restaurant is within our district, unless we are out of service then we can stop at just about anywhere(our parish/county training center is about 25miles from the city.) It's rare that we eat out at a restaurant though, but we run a 12hr shift on fridays so that is the general day we go out to eat. We stopped at a Wendys this past Friday day for lunch, had a call while waiting on our food. We took off to the engine and went to the call. Afterwards we headed back to the restaurant and finished our food. The only problem with going out to fancier restaurants is that some of the guys like to complain about their food (when they have a genuine reason to complain of course) and its generally frowned upon to do so in uniform since once you put on that uniform you are no longer representing yourself but the department as a whole.

I have been visiting other FD's in the US and some can go with their vehicles to a restaurant, in our case we cannot, we must cook at the station, some stations have restaurants at their side or in front of the firehouse, then yes you can go and eat there until of course "the bell rings".

Nope, we can order food and it can only be picked up. God we would be mobbed if we sat down. Our fire based EMS has a station, so it is not like we are sitting on the street corner in a bus.
But we can only pick up food if we are returning from a call or training. The public has spoken that they bring there food to work and so should we. And they also said they are not afforded a company car with free fuel to go get it either. (Well it is their money)
The chief agreed to what I said before.
