I would LOVE to comment on this! It's a local problem here as well. Under NO circumstances, NONE should this garbage be allowed. I would bet highly that if this particular department (and I admit I know nothing of them) ever viewed certain footage of firefighters responding in this mannor, or similar, as in riding the back step, they would be just as critical as I am being. It is OFF LIMITS to us, why would we subject the public to something we would NEVER do?
Fire apparatus are an emergecny vehicle, equipemtn to be used by trained professionals under the strictest of supervision, as safely as possible. Personally I would refuse to drive this assignment.
THEY ARE KIDS! WTF? The fire service IS it's own worst enemy. Here is proof!

If it is a short distance or for a parade what is it going to hurt? Arent we all looking for good public relations and what a better way to get it then supporting your local sports teams after big compations. If you support your community they will support you. What I want to know is what happened to plain common sense? It all cannt come out of a text book because we all know just because it works on paper it dont always work in the real world. As i see the picture there is a fireman in the front and the coaches are in the back with the team sitting in the middle not a problem my hat is off to the dept for supporting the community, what away to recruit future firefighters.

At first, I thought this was horrible. But, now, as I look at it... if this is part of a short parade, it is no different than a float. If the Chula Vista FD believes their role in serving the community includes taking a ladder truck out of service to be a float to help create an indelible memory of support for the community, especially in these tough economic times, well, kudos to them for understanding you can't always look at things in a vacuum!

Short distance, low speed...perhaps. I understand the point. Unfortunetly my opinion is based on what I have witnessed over the years with this very same thing. Kids riding on the hose bed, through town, or on the aerial exactly as shown, and for several blocks, sirens sounding, air horns blowing. Next time we take a run, I wonder why traffic don't wanna move? Must be another parade!
Maybe I am harsh. I get that way. They belong in a parade on a school bus, or perhaps some fabricated float. It isn't such a rare event that people fall from apparatus during all types functions like this. And knowing full well that it is absoluetly 100% unacceptable for any of US to do that, how could anyone expect to justify this dicession if for some reason someone WAS injured, and civil litigation resulted? A fall from that height could surely be serious injury, and even death. Check the arcieves, it HAS happened. Is it worth the bad publicity that would result, or the "undisclosed" settlements from your department or community? Would you feel the same way if it happened an you were the officer who allowed it?
I know, I just aint no fun. I feel this strongly about it. But I respect your opinions contrary to mine.

The only problem I see is if someone loses their footing and falls off of the truck. That is a long ways down and an injury is imminent. Other than that it's just PR. Maybe they would have been safer on the hosebed of an engine but this is how they wanted it.
