When I started 30 years ago our engineers did minor maintenance on our engines. Now the guy we have favorite words are, "get it towed to the dealer" I understand things have changed since then but are there engineers that still change the oil and stuff?

The engineer at my vol. fire house maintains and repairs both rigs. However at my fdny house they are maintained by the city.
We have a couple of engineers that perform minor maintenance and repairs as needed. We really don't like having the apparatus hauled off to apparatus maintenance cause we never know when we'll get it back or if they will fix the problem the right way.
in lyons oregon yes we do have a few engineers that do the maintenence on out rigs and they enjoy it because the know exacly how to do it and they know that it is being done right and i am glad they do it becasue i trust them to get it dont quick and correctly
My department had an officer who was also a diesel mechanic. He did maintenance and other repairs. Once he retired and a new chief was appointed all the apparatus now gets done by approved and licensed faculties.
We are only allowed to do minor repairs ( air in tires, bulbs, batteries etc... ). Anything mechanical my Chief sends to the shop because of the liability issue.
Justin, Nope not here. Any maintenance, service or repairs gets done by a certified apparatus repair person.
On my volly department, we used to have two good mechanics that did all the maintenance to our apparatus. Over the years the two of them retired off and no longer do it. Unfortunately, we've been left with a lot of folks that don't know that much about engine maintenance. So we too are the folks that pay to get things done to our rigs.
At our station I am one of the engineers. I do all the weekly checks and some of the minor repairs, and so forth. However because of the insurance companies and legal weenies I can not perform most of the stuff that I have the training, skill, and experiance to take care of. I am one of those that takes the equipment in for the repairs and I stay with the equipment to make sure it is completed correctly and in a timely manner. However you also have to realize that 90% of the volunteer department do not have staff on hand to do this sort of thing. We are lucky enough that a few of us are retired and spend more time at the station than we do at home.

We do most of the "minor"work ourselves (change lightbulbs, motor oil) but if the actual drive train or pump needs work, we call the professionals in.
Craig, I get to be the fire cheif, maint. engineer, hose roller & floor sweeper. But, I also own & operate my own heavy diesel shop (same duties as above apply there also). The only things that I don't do, are tires, washing, oil & grease, and paint (looks like my grandkids done it). However, our volunteers handle the light maintenance, tires, and even paint (one is really talented). We have to do our own, because our budget only allows enough money for parts. It is definitely a group effort, I am very proud of our team. No matter what time of day or night, if its broke, we fix it then. Providing I have the parts. In my spare time I get to work on
the neighbors apparatus also,LOL.
Well, tonight before training, I changed a taillight bulb and bled the air tank...I think that counts!
