In your opinion, what are they top five issues facing FF's today? Now dont get ahead of me... we will work on fixing them a little later. Right now, lets just hear the issues
1) less fires - real speed experience is slowing slipping away from us
2) less manpower - having to do more with less and no end in sight to manpower cuts
3) a generation of knowledge retiring w/out passing their knowledge on to the next generation
4) a new generation not committed to learning from the older generation
5) a sense of entitlement in the new generation - they do not understand earning this career - when a person gets hired, he/she has a job but when he/she is respected through experience and time, that's when it becomes a career
1. Lack of training
2. Budgeting issues
3. Staffing or manpower
4. Preventable LODD
5. Lack of pride for the fire service in general
The fifth issue I listed sort of encompasses the rest (except budgeting) and I feel the lack of pride in the fire service now directly reflects in these shortcomings.
1. Lack of a unified voice.
2. Shrinking tax base.
3. Officers who lack leadership skills.
4. Physical fitness of old and new members.
5. Getting to the scene safely (driving).
1. Failure to recognize new members as great assets and to keep them involved, encouraged and proud.
2. Inability of officers to lead by DELEGATING. "....lack leadership skills".
1. Budget restraints
2. The NFPA (Infiltrated with to many manufacturer reps, not enough firefighters)
3. Technology (meaning we train differently and use newer tools and have thrown the collective older knowledge of the fire service to the wayside)
4. Elected Officials
5. Testing Methods (We promote folks who can take a test, we do not promote the actual leaders in the fire service)
1. Radical changes in construction practices are changing the playing field. I.E. Engineered beams and lt. steel framing.
2. Advances in equipment and tactics that are dismissed outright by the old guard.
3. Petty departmental politics.
4. Gaps in leadership.
5. A much more bizarre and dangerous general public with which we have to deal.
Ok first let me say this is from a volunteer stand point.
1. Manpower
2. Money
3. Training
4. water supply
5. govt mandates that don not pertain to your area but forced on whole country
