Gong?
we want to put a gong in our lounge that goes of when we get a call. the problem is noone in our dpt. knows anyting about them or where to get one. any help is appreciated. thanks

Ok, I'll bite. Go to any music store, they sell gongs in many sizes. I like the big ones, they're louder. ;)

i know what your talking about, but am not sure where to get one, and deffinetly no idea how to set it up. Try ebay to find the gong or a through google search, thats how i find most of my stuff.

Find an old oos fire alarm and take the gong. Not sure how you are going to activate it.

All of our stations have bells or gongs as you refer to them. I will tell you I am by no means an expert on the subject, the city used to have a gamewell system but got rid of it city wide about two years ago..as far as I know you would need a dedicated phone line from your dispatch center to your station and the bells are d/c current so you need a converter....visit www.youngstownfire.com/callbox/wiring.html hope this helps

I may be able to help you. I have a few in my personal collection. You can pick them up from time to time on ebay, and some private deals as well. pm me and I can give you some possible prospects. They work on very low voltage, 1000 miliamps. Actually I am contemplating having a couple hooked-up in my station as well. It shouldn't be hard to install them to your current system, step down the voltage, and have it "hit" for a couple strokes.
Gamewell still makes those red bells used for fire alarm systmes, and they too can be made to work in that mannor.
There are two types though, of the older design. One is electro-mechanical, whhich requires winding. The other is strictly electrical, and is basically a "tapper bell" which needs to winding. You can pick either up on ebay occassionally. Look for a 10" Turtle Gong with either a chain-wind, or a key wind through the middle. The tappers are usually 6" to occassionally 8"-11", but are not as loud. Turtle gongs also come in 6" size. For a 10" turtle gong, which is plenty loud, expect to pay around $100.00 - $150.00 but no more.
The gongs encased in oak or cherry cabinets are far too expensive, in the thousands of dollars range, and are collectors pieces.
