I am a really big American LaFrance fan . The one on my pics is a 2001 American LaFrance Eagle Series Rescue/Engine . My second favorite would ba a Pierce Dash
I've seen first hand and rubbed elbows with representatives and mechanics to know of too many of the problems.
Rosenbauer is too cheap and cuts corners.
Ferrara also has cut some corners and would build a tanker on a shopping cart chassis if the customer requested and paid for it.
E-Won't wouldn't touch a truck once it got off the assembly line, leaving the problems to the dealer or customer (not to mention numerous other problems with MULTIPLE apparatus locally).
I don't like the design of HME chassis' and the lack of quality placed into KME, a.k.a. Keeping Mechanics Employed, so that's enough for me to not look at their stuff.
ALF, well, they're going bankrupt and I couldn't help but notice how more than a few of their rigs are catching on fire.
As far as Pie(r)ce of poo, no way in hell would I take a Pretender, even if it was free. As far as the rest of the rigs until they were bought by OshKosh, Pierce has a good history. I'd take a rig up until around a '97 year model. Once Pie(r)ce was bought by OshKosh (can't remember the year exactly), the QA went downhill. I mean, c'mon, it's bad enough that a company puts a flyer of an apparatus out and you can't even catch a burnt out pump panel light on a rig that's not even left the factory. All the company cares about now is making a buck.
Sutphen and Seagrave have always turned out some good engines. Smeal does a good job of building all rigs. Also, if I wanted an aerial device, hands down it'd be a Smeal. Nothing like knowing your rig was built by a bunch of good ol' corn fed Nebrasken boys working for a family owned company.
Have had some really good luck with Rosenbaurer (Central States), spec'ing all the heaviest duty components and custom chassis. Just took delivery of our sixth custom from them, now having four Pumpers, one Quint and one Tower. The first two, an engine and the Tower are on HME chassis, and the last four, the Quint and the three Rescue Pumpers on Spartan Gladiator chassis. Rosenbaurer consistently came in lowest bidder, which was important in getting through the bean counters, guess this has to do with them being the largest world-wide apparatus manufacturer (2nd in U.S. behind Pierce). Have past experience with several Pierce at this department, and Darley and Peter Pirsch custom engines and trucks (R.I.P.) and E-One at my old department, way back. Have been VERY pleased with the quality of trucks we've been getting from Rosenbauerer. Check our departments website (don't think it's updated with the newest delivery yet, putting the 2000 Central States into reserve status / replacing the last Pierce we had), for pictures, It's at www.PCFD.com -
Thank care & Be safe

Our department has always used Alexis trucks and a lot of the guys on the department think they are the greatest trucks there is but thats because they have never run a different kind of truck. I personally am a fan of Pierce.
I THINK THE BEST TYPE OF PUMPER IS AMERICAN LAFRANCE, AND EONE, I HAVE HAD VERY GOOD LUCK WITH THOSE TO TYPES OF APPARATUS. IT REALLY DEPENDS ON WHAT YOUR FIRE DEPARTMENT CAN AFFORD.
I am not fond of American LaFrance at all. I was at one time a big supporter of E-One, but they started going down hill as well. I have recently had the opportunity to deal with Rosenbauer and find their trucks to be awesome. Not only are they built good, but are practical to what your department may need. Very versatile.
For us hands down its Alexis fire equipment, a true custom mfg. We got our first in 1946, been with them ever since, and ordered a new one 2 weeks ago. Comparative prices, we’ve checked and you have to compare apples to apples, this ain’t no assemble line junk. If we have a problem there jonny on the spot, and if it’s a lengthy repair they have loaners. Course it helps when your 15 miles away.
