I work for a major auto retail store.They have a policy for volunteer firefighters and police.If something comes up, I only have to let my boss know whats up and go.They require a notice from the chief however I have gained the trust from them and do not need it.I am a Division Chief at the dept. which does require a certain amount of dedication ,But I have been able to balance to two .Not many places I know about support us as much as this company.During the huricanes which did alot of damage in our town, My boss called and told me to "stay in your community and take care of the people".I know this cost them but they only wanted to make sure the people of the town were safe.I cannot imagine working anywhere else.What does your paying job say?Do they support it?

I work for a local hospital and they dont mind if I am late for work because of a call. But once I am here I am pretty much stuck until it is time to go home.
My past employers had no problem with me leaving whenever needed. My new employer has no problem with it either, it's just too far away to respond though :(
My "Paying" job is that of Training Officer for a larger CT PD. I cannot leave for calls unless I use personal leave time.n As I am a couple of towns away from my district it needs to be a significant call to warrant my leaving.
I'm glad that just about every response has been positive, there are some great employers out there. I'm also glad that nobody has come on flaming their boss because they can't go to calls. When we think about it, it all comes down to money - and if a boss can't let you go because it either costs too much or interferes with production, then they can't let you go!
I am a stay at home mother so my children are my job if my husband is home i can go on calls or if i have a babysitter available ......... My husband on the other hand actually was just removed from the same department that i am on because his job would not let him respond and he was not making enough calls due to work. Unfortunatly we have to have the job in this case before the fire family has to come first.
They removed him because he couldnt run enought calls...wow. My Lt. hasnt ran a call in over 2 months but shell never get kicked out because of that..
We've had people kicked off for not responding several times. Or they pick on you enough to make you quit. BUT if you have a good reason, it isn't a problem. I work @ an academic library. I don't carry my pager to work with me but if someone calls because it is a major call, my boss lets me take my annual leave to go if I don't leave everyone else in a mess because of it but my co workers are really supportive & will trade with me if I ask them to. I have also used my annual time to call in dead now & then when we've been out all night.
Sounds like alot of you have good employers. Im not so lucky if i am on a run and late for work they dont count it against me if i have a return to work slip signed by an officer on department letter head {only because thats Ohio law}. But if I am at work im not even allowed to carry my pagerin the building let alone leave. The funny thing is i work in a neighboring fire district that we run mutual aid with and have been called to my work before for a fire. And yes when my department got there I went to my department.
They don't say much. I'm the Training and Education Planner for The Firemen's Association of the State of New York.
I don't abuse my alternate time off policies, so if I get called out for an 0-Dark:30 call, or if it infringes on my office time, as long as I let them know where I am and what I'm doing, it's cool.

Once I'm AT my day job however, I don't respond, because it's simply too far away to answer the call.
i'm fortunate, my day job is hanging out with my family becasue i work midnights. if the tones go out i am up and out the door.(usually rthey go off after i've been sleeping for about 30 minutes). as for leaving work i have never had to deal with it becasue i work about 30 minutes out of my district. usually if there is a call at night they have more then enough people to handle it. as for being ate to work after a call ive ever had to do it. if i am on scene and i tell an officer i need to go get ready for work they understand and say go ahead.

I am employed by a state goverment agency. We have a state law here in ohio that states any public employee is paid 40 hrs on a rolling calender year to be on fire/eme calls.

This law was design for us to be late for work and or recouparate form an eme/fire call and be paid up to 8 hours per incident. However we are not allowed to leave work under this law and be paid. However we are allowed to leave work for such calls and use are vacation time. Except in exterme situations. Then we are paid by the state. On a case By case.

Now for the individual that is not a public employee. We have a state law that says and employer can not discpline and employee for being late for work because of a fire / eme call. The employer does not have to pay that employee for the lost time. It is the employee responsability to provide the proper paper work by law to his employer.
Iam a Volunteer with Volusia county, But Iam also a 911 Dispatcher for the same county so when something comes up Iam the one to dispatch it and can not leave to go to the call. so I go to the Station on my day's off to run calls.
