Top Issues Facing Responders:
Training and Safety.

If you're not training in your down time, you're doing an injustice to the people working underneath you.

We work an average of 10 shifts per month. We train an average of 15 times per month. That's a minimum of 15 hours per month. My opinion is that's not enough. How many hours do you get?

Train like your life depends on it. Make sure the people you are responsible for have the tools necessary to go home safely.

I would like to personally invite any of the members of FirefighterNation who are from Kentucky or Southern Indiana, and who are planning on attending the Fire School, to stop by and see us.

Hydrant testing

I don't know about the rest of you, but we are required to test our hydrants here. The water company does not do it. We do a flow test in the spring and we flush them in the fall.

In any event, you test enough hydrants and eventually you'll see something you really wished you'd never seen. For example - last year a cap blew off a hydrant and landed half way across the street. Most of our hydrants have either a 5" discharge and two 2… Continue

Charleston

I just read the report issued on the Charleston incident. It's posted at Firehouse.com if anyone is interested in reading it.

It is a very well written and detailed report that covers the multitude of tactical errors that were made on that fateful day. It is almost disheartening to see that the people in charge of making sure their members go home safely at the end of their tour could be so inept at their jobs.

I would encourage EVERYONE to read this report. Get an idea of… Continue

I don't understand...

Posted on May 4, 2008 at 10:43pm 32 Comments

I posted a comment in a training forum outlining a good search line drill that was easy and fun to do, and received 8 comments.

Then I see a post on whether or not blackened helmets are "cool" that received 26 comments.

I don't understand how this happens. It's not that my topic didn't receive any comments, I'm more miffed because I think people's priorities are fucked up.

That's all I wanted to say.

Remember - be safe out there, and… Continue
