Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...February 28, 2010

I had a killer week so yesterday I took advantage of the quiet morning and decided to sleep in. At 9:40 a.m. I heard my pager from two rooms away asking for all members to report to their respective stations for hydrant duty at 10. I started to drift back to dream land and then POPPED out of bed. I never had hydrant duty before and figured it had to do with the foot and a half of snow we've had here in…

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...February 20, 2010 (what day is it? LOL)

To all you blog followers out there, I am sorry I haven't written lately!!!! Alot has happened since my last blog post, some good, some not so good, and some funny.

First for the funny stuff - one of the guys at our firehouse, a very experienced veteran, drove the ladder truck to a call about a mile or so away. General alarm call, nothing to speak about, and 15 minutes or so later was back…

My days have been spent lately packing up my home, taking care of my kids' needs, and looking for a job. I wish I had more time to look for a job. I went to a seminar at the Career Center Tuesday at NJ Employment and the instructor told us a whopping fact - actually two facts:

1-Most employers look through thousands of resumes; and

2-Many more employers are submitting positions to NJ Employment to save on a recruiting… Continue

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...January 28, 2010

I heard some sad news yesterday. There was a house fire in a neighboring town and a resident died and two firefighters were hurt. A few of us were talking about it later that day and someone said something I didn't know. Keep something in your wallet that if you are hurt you want to go to a particular hospital. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and firefighters.

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...January 22, 2010

It seems my days are spent getting through the day until 4:00 comes and I go up to the firehouse for my Diet Coke and some comradary.

Since Thanksgiving, I have shed alot of baggage and made some decisions that will affect me the rest of my life. I agreed to a divorce, put my house on the market before we got foreclosed upon, and lost my job which I loved. Behind the scenes of all this "stuff" is the fact that my daughter has been missing somewhere in Atlantic City for almost four… Continue

Ho Ho Ho!

This is Tuesday, right?

Sunday was our Santa Run and my body still hasn't recovered. I rode on the back of a trailer in gear after our foot of snow the night before, handing out candy canes to families who came out of their homes. We also were met with many happy dogs who were tossed a biscuit by our energetic Brian!

Santa was in style this year in a brand new sleigh donated by the… Continue

Yesterday was a busy day for us Morris Twp volunteers. Our pancake breakfast was a HUGE success. I mean HUGE. The weather towards the end was icy rain but it didn't stop over 270 people from coming to the breakfast. And of course a picture with Santa always helps!

Later on I went to our township thank you dinner at Rod's. What always impresses me most are the awards for 50 and 50+ years of service to the fire… Continue

I was feeling kind of sad all day thinking how it's the holiday season and because of my impending divorce my other half has lost all interest in decorating our home, buying a tree, and getting into the Christmas spirit with my sons.

I went to the firehouse feeling melancholy, and myself and two other people finished setting up the tables for tomorrow's pancake breakfast. When we were done, sans Christmas decorations, I… Continue

Remember the other day when I made a note to self about snow and my driveway?

Well, my driveway was just plowed at 1:00.

I worked from home today.

At least I can get out now if we are dispatched.

Second note to self - Thank God that I have a great boss.

Well, I survived our firehouse's election of officers. I was voted in as secretary which makes sense because of my love affair with my laptop. However, I have roughly 26 days to get over my stage fright which includes reading minutes, correspondence, and roll call in front of 50 people.

No antidepressant works that good I can tell you that.

How did I ever speak in front of 400 people just three years… Continue

Note 1 to self: Remember to move the car to the top of the hill in case of fire calls like last night.

Note 2 to self: Remember to yell at the snow plow guy who is also a volunteer FF should have known better to leave me with a snowy driveway. Well maybe not yell but just remind him. LOL

Note 3 to self: It is the most incredibly wonderful feeling getting divorced. Now the only one that can try to control me is my… Continue

Yesterday I was at the firehouse when a call came in. I made a big blunder. But in fairness to all of us rookies out there...HOW THE HECK AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW IF NO ONE TELLS ME? LOL

I didn't know that sitting in the front is a no-no and one that I didn't know (no pun intended).

This is something I will not forget.

Remember like 2 weeks ago I wrote that I had the courage to tell someone something?

Well, it was my husband.

We finished that conversation on Thanksgiving night.

We are separating.

At least now I don't have to ask permission to go on a fire call.

Sometimes I try to say witty things on this post but not today.

I am so proud of myself. I have been trying to tell someone something for three years and had the courage to say it last night. Do I feel better? I don't know yet. But at least I did it.

This is lame, not anything to do with the fire service I know, but who do I tell but you guys that would not judge me, as always?

Enjoy your… Continue

Here it is, Friday the 13th, and I can't stop thinking that this day has to be a good one. My week at the fire service was slow with only two calls I believe. Anyway, I didn't feel so well and would have had to stay back anyway.

The end of the year brings alot of activities at our firehouse - pancake breakfast, visit with Santa, elections, etc. I was nominated to be trustee and secretary. I chose the latter. In any… Continue
