The Reason for the Denver Drill

I recently had the pleasure to spend some time with Chief Dave McGrail from the Denver Fire Department. Besides discussing high rise and stand pipe operations, we talked about the Denver Drill and the circumstances from which it was derived. Most have heard the story of Mark Langvardt and the fire that took his life. The following videos show just how difficult it was for Denver firefighters to rescue firefighter Langvardt. You can see the desperation and helplessness on their faces as they work…See More

“What are you going to do at 3:00 in the morning when you get that call with people hanging out of windows with an active fire?”

We’ve all heard or said that in regards to our training and preparation at some point in our career. It’s safe to say that it can be considered cliché because it is mentioned so often. But, without a doubt and with no debate, it is true!

On July 20, 2016 my department responded to a report of smoke in…

In the last few weeks I posted about being aggressive. In that post I mentioned that we, our department, will search without a hose line.  This seemed to raise some eyebrows and concern about what I…

Tool or No Tool?

When we go to conferences or sit around with other engaged firefighters there is no lack of lively conversation and debate. From world affairs, to sports teams, bands and of course, tactics! There is no better time spent with other firefighters learning about what others do and why. That is the key, WHY, things are done the way…

This episode is a discussion about ground ladders. It’s a basic piece of equipment that has such a huge value to us on the fire ground, but in many cases, get’s forgotten.  They’re forgotten until they are needed, and then it could be a life and death situation for firefighters and victims.

We talk briefly about some…

Thank you for the add as well, Jason. I kind of figured that is what you meant with that comment. It would be nice if every department had the resources and manpower that those people seem to have. Anyway, thanks again and I am always looking forward to the knowledge and expertise that you bring to all of us!! Stay Safe

Hey chief, I liked your two topics in the forums, "Its that simple" and "Whats your take". I too gawk at things when my wife and I go out. And as a Captain I feel what your saying about training. I cant get my dept to train, its always equipment maintenance or truck checks...Still working on the chief. We have a new training tower in our county though so maybe that will change things.
Stay Safe.

Hello Jason,

Thanks for the invite and add brother! I've visited your FFOWE site and you're doing an awesome job! - I also appreciate the "hat tips" you've given my way. It's very refreshing to see individuals like yourself who put in a tremendous amount of time to ensure the safety of our fellow firefighters. Keep up the great work - It's appreciated by more than you know.

Best Regards,

Back at you. Your posts are well thought out and thought provoking... I'm assuming that's your goal here and you are doing it well. I'm all over the map on the FFN after doing this gig for over 30 years. It's fun to give back once and awhile...

My passion is WMD hospital hazmat response and decon. I have been teaching this in the field nationally for a long time now and look forward to being able to focus on this endeavor once getting retired from the fire department and dealing with a couple of medical issues.
