The Backroom Crew

This is a place where we can sit down, put our feet up and chill. Where the Boys and Girls can just be themselves. The Back Room or what most firefighters call a ''day room or rec room'' is the social point of every firehouse.

Heather, at one point, I can actually say ( many years ago) I dreamed that the ol' Plectron went off, got up, went all the way to the station, and couldnt figure out where the rest of the department was. LMAO. yes, I dreamed it all, responded hot the station, for nothing. YEP Im a real riot, and take great pleasure in being the source of others amusement.

Ernie - a great way to check your gear is to say to another FF on scene - is my gear all done up properly?

Someone else can look at you and see if you missed a neck strap or buckle, etc. And may just save your life...

You check them - they check you...

You also practice putting your gear on over and over and over hundreds of times in the dark - cold wet - heap - with and without SCBA and get use to how each part FEELS HOOKED PROPERLY and FEELS UNHOOKED with and without SCBA!!!

Ernie, thats the only way you're gonna learn, is observing. ya seen things somewhere? go to the right people at your department, and ask questions. ya can never learn too much or ask too many questions in this job. and if its in your jurisdiction, and you think it might be a hazard. i.e. those extension cords....hello? bring it to someone's attention. have an inspector answer questions about that kind of stuff. sounds as if there's a safety violation there, but........ and yeah Heather, it sucked at the time , but it was him hot doggin' it, and did something stupid at work, and blew his knee out. then didnt listen after the surgery, went to the calls again for a short while, after being told he couldnt, he screwed up the surgical repair, and that was all she wrote. ( needless to say, that stupidity carried over to quite a few other things, and after 13 yrs, he became the ex)

I am sure there was an on scene plan, and I would assume it is probably the SOPs playing out. I was receiving orders from Lt's, Capt's, Chiefs and other seasoned FFs. Everything is a learning experience and I have learned quite a bit on this call that will make things much clearer on the next one, that is for sure.

Great point there and I am not totally sure what the SOPs are for decon yet. I would assume that I would probably get to go to the used gear room and pick out another set. These are things that are always running through my mind.

I have kind of been driving the wife and kids nuts lately anyway with my always looking around at fire protection systems when we are in the stores around town as well as a few things that peaked my interest at our Wal-Mart including a message on the annunciator that stated "Fire Alarm System Battery Low" and the multiple extension cords that they have bundled to the steel rafters.

Sucked Izzy - that someone had to get hurt - in order for you to run all the calls... But I am glad that you got to go career !!! Awesome !

LOL @ Heather, or if you're out of your jurisdiction, and driving through an area with some decent smoke, ya roll down the truck's window, take a good whiff, and ya start to break down whats burning !! oh my, we've been doing this too long

Ernie - You said there was NO scene plan.

I think you should re-consider that statement.

WHO was in charge?
Who gave you commands?
Who told you to take the hydrant?
Who told you to pack up?

They must have been implementing a plan... since they were delegating !!!

Nothing on scene should be haphazard - it should all be calculated.

It would serve you well to not only personally evaluate it - but discuss it with others that were on scene to help you put terminology to the actions.

I can tell from your comments - a lot of the plan implemented on scene.

Definitely so, on all counts!! The engines have a short garden hose on them that we use for clean up, the chief sprayed me down, but didn't quite get everything, but, for a more involved scene, I will make sure that it is taken care of on scene or at the station.
