The Backroom Crew

This is a place where we can sit down, put our feet up and chill. Where the Boys and Girls can just be themselves. The Back Room or what most firefighters call a ''day room or rec room'' is the social point of every firehouse.

well, I spent 15 yrs being called Izzy. in fact, I still have a few people that dont know that my first name is really Jo Anne. LMAO.... hard habit to break. I'll be married 2 yrs in April, and he used to call me Izzy for all those years to, its more that I dont recognize being called Jo or Jo Anne,,, LOL

Wow, I think that would take me a month of sundays to master...LOL, I can see why Izzy stuck like it did!!! The other part can just be chalked up to selective hearing...hehehe...happens to all of us.

LOL, oh, I love that ! thats great. I gave up trying to explain to people how to pronounce it.

it was ISAJEWICZ

but was pronounced : ISS-EYE-YEV-IDGE

and yes, thats what I used to write out for them, to teach them how to say it, but ... Izzy was easier... my husband still has to yell for Izzy sometimes, cause he'll say something, and I dont answer him. LMAO. in fact, we met in EMT school, 14 yrs ago

That is funny Izzy. I know people have continuously tried to avoid pronouncing our last name...hehe. However, my dad always had a great way to explain the pronunciation of it..."think of the black eye that you will have when you mispronounce it and add a 't' to the end of it"...LOL

my crews were great, even in the beginning, Chief took me under his wing, the other guys in the station were never afraid to take me with them, take me in the houses, etc. I guess because I have such a passion for firefighting, and I would listen to what they were telling me, learn, and the more I learned, the more I wanted to learn. it was never an issue. I did have occasion where one or two would do the whole being protective of a woman thing, but I would put them in their place, while I appreciated it, I didnt want the special treatment, of any kind. and I was surprised that they were accepting of that, then as things progressed, I was just another brother. I was the only woman in the department for the longest time.

It is awesome to have that kind of respect and relationship among your crew.

yes sir, hence the name IzzaBitch... LOL... the Izzy was actually because no one could pronounce my first married name, so I got Izzy, and it stuck, we just perfected the IzzaBitch. I was called Izzy for so long that when people call me my real name, I sometimes dont acknowledge them. LMAO

I could always keep up with the best of them, never do I get offended, embarrassed, nothing bothers me, even now, first thing I tell my new kids, engine or ambulance, "look, Im a bitch, if you cant handle that, get the hell out" and we get along great. I tell them, dont walk on eggshells around me, be yourself, you cant offend me, you cant insult me, you cant embarrass me, so just be yourself, but I will admit, I can make a truck driver blush, and have been known to come out with some things in the bays, etc that make everyone stop dead in their tracks
