The Backroom Crew

This is a place where we can sit down, put our feet up and chill. Where the Boys and Girls can just be themselves. The Back Room or what most firefighters call a ''day room or rec room'' is the social point of every firehouse.

Right now, I can only imagine. Been with the FD here for about 8 months now, but we only train once a month. As I mentioned earlier, I am working on my FF1 Cert. right now along with three other guys in my Dept. and others from surrounding communities and just got CPR Cert. this week. Luckily, we haven't had very many General tones, unfortunately, that doesn't help to build and sustain the skills either. However, our instructors are also pondering the idea of getting a propane tree for us to train on as well...will have to see what they do for us...lol.

Thanks Ernie,

Burns are not killer bad, but always have to look at every angle.

1) If it scars it will be a memory from my first burn
2) I will NEVER do that again lol
3) I will ALWAYS remember to cool my atmosphere beforehand haha

I would drive about a hour to go to another one maybe a little over.

It's fun one heck of a learning experience!!

In my 5 months on the FD I have had about 200 hours of training and I knew what the fire did but seeing it first hand was miraculous!

Tiller- That definitely makes for a really great learning experience, from the way things are sounding, it is looking like we will have to use the burn tower about 70 miles away from us to train in. Sorry about the burns!!

Thanks everyone!

It was a one story with attic, 3 rooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom.

The bathroom was converted into a oven practically, they lined it with drywall then put metal over it. (it was hot).

It was a 4 man team (everyone was on my FD which was cool).

First I was the backup man behind nozzle, we went in and they started the fire it was not very hot, it got going to and it was pretty cool, we hit the top to cool it down watched how the thermal layering worked.

Watched how the gases ignited, THAT was AWESOME!!!

Then next time in I was nozzle, my instructor failed to mention I need to cool down the room before entering..... it was HOT, melted my helmet, face shield, when I knelled down on my right knee, it got burnt not bad bad but it's not touchable right now without pain.

Hard lesson learned but will NEVER forget it.

I played with the nozzle and knocked the fire down a bit watched how it grew and what not.

We were burning hay and pallets.

This house was I think they said 130 years old.

Once that room was done we went to the kitchen where I was the backup man again and burned, that was a regular room and we saw how the fire moved and acted that was pretty awesome as well!

Then they lost it shortly after and we watched it burn.

I was also 4th man back once just pulling hose.

So I learned the following,
Cool your atmosphere BEFORE going in!
Penciling
How far travels down the wall from the gases
How fire acts when hit softly and then hit hard
Dont panic (I didnt panic, got a little nervous when it got hot but kept my cool)
Watch your brothers and sisters backs.
Have fun and be safe about it!

Remember all the great times!

Good evening everyone!!

Joyce- Hope the pain subsides soon for you

Tiller- Congrats on the live burn...still waiting for my first yet, which shouldn't be too terribly long now as we are getting close to testing on unit 2 for our FF Cert. which means practicals are just around the corner as well!!

Heather- Since I am still one of the FNG's, I am continuing to try to tiptoe around the carnage and behave to the best of my abilities.
