"It's a calling and it's my passion! It's one of those things you'll never really understand unless you do it for yourself. Best thing you could ever do with your life is be a fireman. It's not for everyone, but it is for me!"
Oh ya, that "Passion Not A Job" group title say's it all! Sure, any pay is a plus; especially these days; but thats not the main reason you become a Volunteer Firefighter/First Responder. Its not the reason I was for 22+ years. It was just to help others out when they needed it. As a little kid I was saved many times; from the wrath of Mother Nature to my own stupidity. Our neighbor then, the Fire Chief, told me being a firefighter was my destiny. Turns out he was right. Guess I was just in training? :) I'm retired now, but still miss responding to call's. When it get's in your blood, its for life!

I have been a volunteer firefighter for almost 11 years with the Town of Elmore in Vermont. When I was little, being at a parade and see the fire trucks & ambulances go by. This gave me a life long dream to be a firefighter and even on the rescue squad. I joined Morristown Rescue when I was 19 and started driving for them. Please do not get me wrong I do not wish for someone to have the need for an ambulance or the fire department, however when the tone(s) go out and pager activates then there is pure passion & adrenalin rush. I know it sounds bad, the passion for firefighting for me is getting in the heat with an airpack on and doing a search then putting the fire out. Passion being on the rescue squad was getting the chance to again help people but in a different way, instead of putting out a fire we are putting a band aid on someone or something more of an emergency. Being on rescue you always see something new, sometimes you need to respond some place and know the patient. No one ever said this line of work "firefighting or rescue" is easy, matter a fact it is not. However that's where the passion really comes in, if you don't have the passion for what you are doing you may get hurt!!! If you have the passion for it then you are well trained and becareful on what is going on for you and your fellow firefighters or rescue personal!!! Please remember !!!!!!SAFETY FIRST!!!!!!
being in fire and ems is defently a passion to me and not just a job. i live my life for firefighting and rescue. just knowing that everyday i can help someone is a blessing to me.
A passion for helping others truly is a gift. I could never forget the feeling of sheer happiness after knowing that you did all that you could for victims in accidents and fires. It truly is a blessing. :)
