Why I Joined Fire/EMS: I became involved in the fire/EMS community in 1992 when I became a psychology issues writer for the former Emergency magazine in Redondo Beach, California. My assignments for 7 years revolved around stress in emergency responders and solutions to help responders copy and thrive in their challenging environments (at work). A lot of my articles focused on improving their personal lives as well.

Why I Love Fire/EMS: Responders Will Save a Life in Every Family in America

Top Issues Facing Responders:: * Budget cuts in departments--requiring more coverage with fewer dollars--and intensifying personal stress for all
* Physical health issues--chronic and acut fatigue due to running too many calls
* Strained politics of the workplace--working with leadership and co-workers who have trouble buying into a common vision
