First off let me say I am new  the Nation. I look forward to the future with each and every one of my brothers and sisters in the time ahead. When did training loose it's importance to our seasoned firefighters. Is it the fault of the membership or a shortfall of the leadership?

Leadership needs to show and support training as a priority. If leadership dosnt support it then the rank and file wont give it its due importance. Train to respond and respond the way you train

most of the training senior firefighters have had consisted of actual activities,

today's requirements in training consist of classroom time, either online or off line. because insurance requirements change and now stipulate iso certification in much of the training.

many seasoned firefighter either do not want this or think they do not need it, and often think the insurance requirements are just a lot of political bullcrap

How often do many of the seasoned( older, retirement age personnel actually spend time in front of a computer?) not as many as you might think!

Its one of the reasons Im trying to get a few computer systems set up at our station just for training.

and I instruct people in the use of computers as well.

training officers need to be established and they need to be proactive in getting the information and classes organized. keeping the chiefs apprised of the qualifications of the members is important so as to prevent an unqualified person getting injured from something they weren't trained on.

Its in the best benefit of a department to get their people properly trained as expediently as possible.

keeping things interesting!

well there are many ways to do this, humor, praise, activities, surprise scenarios where participation requires solving possible problems, awards for training,

and above all making mistakes in training is a valuable learning tool, as long as it is not used for a punitive action.

you will know when your training has kept interest when you see the ah-ha moments your students get when they fully understand what you are teaching them( that is really rewarding)
