Around here every department has a different color helmet for thier firefighters. We have white for chief and asst. chief. Red for captain and leuitenants. And yellow for everyone else. Saftey officer is blue. But the neighbors have black, and the officers on other are different colors. This makes it hard for all of us to decifer officers from firemen. If we went to one helmet color for everyone it would make it easier for us to tell.

Ours is as follows

Chief, Deputy Chief, Asst. Chief - White
Capt., Lt. - Red
FF's - Black
Probationary - Yellow

The only stickers we can put on ours is a small American Flag.
We had the same problem, so what we did was chief officers wear white, captains wear red, firefighters that are trained up to the NFPA 1403 live burn certifications wear black, safety officer wears orange for the visibility, rookies wear yellow so they can be identified easily, and our first responder LT wears Blue. Each member can be identified easily and we know who can do what. Hope this helps.
My Dept. is in the middle of about 5 other response areas. Each city is uniform with on another except ours. We have chief and asst. chief with white. Lt/capts with red, firefighters with yellow, and Probationary members not yet trained with SCBAs wear black along with Jrs. Our automatic aid depts are the same up until firefigher helmet. Firefighters wear black, and all Prob FF were yellow.
In my dept chief is white,1st&2nd asst,caps and louies are red and rest are black.Rookies are black with red reflectors on them.
on my dept.

chief, deputy chief,asst chief === white

captains ===red

leuitenants==yellow

firefighter==black

juniors==orange
In our department:

White = chief and asst. chiefs
Red = interior FFs
Yellow = past chiefs (unless interior certified)
Orange = junior and restricted active FFs
Black = all other FFs including lieutenants and captains not interior certified
Blue = EMTs and CFRs not in structural gear

All fire helmets are Bullard composite type New Yorker style with the exception of the orange helmets which are Cairns metro style. EMS helmets are Bullard.
Our dept. is pretty much standard, Chief and Capt.from each company is white then East End in Yellow, South Ward in blue, Citizens in black and American Hose in red. with lieutenants and engineers marked by a different front than regular members. Unless of course you buy your helmet, you are alowd any color except white unless you are a capt, or chief. mine is a natural New Yorker (but I'm starting to like the PINK idea)
Our Dept: Cheif n Ass Cheif = White
Capt = Red
Lieut = Yellow
FF = Black (Rookies/Probies have orange scotchlite - Exp. have silver scotchlite)
FF/Medic = Blue
In Monroe County, PA ther is no set standard for colors. In our dept, whie is for chief, ass chief, captain & lieutenants; red is for engineer, orange is for safety officer & yellow for the rest. Some other depts in the county use different colors for line officers, probies & juniors. I think there should be a standard color scheme so no one gets confused.
MY VOLLY STATION USES WHITE FOR THE CHIEFS AND YELLOW FOR CAPTAINS AND RED FOR LIEUTENANTS WITH BLACK FOR THE FIREFIGHTERS. AT WORK IT IS WHITE FOR THE CAPTAINS AND RED FOR THE LIEUTENANTS BLACK HELMET WITH A RED FRONT FOR ENGINEERS AND BLACK WITH BLACK FOR THE FIREFIGHTERS. AT THE VOLLY STATION OUR NON TRAINED AND OUR JR'S WEAR RED TURTLE HEADS WITH ORANGE STICKERS SO THAT THERE IS NO MISTAKING THEM FOR A TRAINED FIREFIGHTER. BLUE IS MEDICAL
Well there used to be a time (down here) where the lighter the helmet the more experienced (IE Chief white, Capt Yellow, Lt Red, FF Black) Not that I'm bitching about standardizing, but if they ever were to do so, that would probably be the best way.
Pretty standard around here. Chiefs (Chief, Deputies, Platoons and Districts) wear white, All officers (Capt, Lt, training officers, safety officers, etc) wear red, the buffaloes wear yellow (probies have a second reflective stripe to identify them).
