I was talking to one of our Probies the other day, and he asked me about Pompier Ladders. I told him that in 14 years, I've never seen one except in pictures. In fact, I'm certain that no F.D. in the Chicagoland area owns one of these! Are there any Fire Departments out there that actually use Pompier Ladders? Thanks in advance!
Hey Brother,
In 1980 in the metro Atlanta area you had two day of training on them and if you failed, no job. I beleieve the FDNY retired the last ones in use by any FD in the late 1990's.
Hope this helped.
They still use them in Asian countries like Japan and China. I have seen videos of Firemen's musters where they have pompier ladder competitions.
The architecture of high rise residential buildings is different in Asia, where they are much more prevalent as well. Even in rural areas it is normal to see a 20-story apartment building rising form the rice paddies where there was once a small village.
In Asian apartment buildings, every apartment has a balcony, which are used for everything from drying clothes on clotheslines to drying peppers in the summertime.
As wrote Laurence, it's quiet the same thing as our "pompier ladder".
We just use it for training. But these ladders are still on our firetrucks ! I completely agree with Ben Waller.
We still have them 'cause it's cheaper than aerial ladder ! and i never seen a french fireman saving a victim with it.
The most important : pompier ladder in France was used without SCBA !!! And now, we use scba all the time.
It can help to introduce in an apartment throw a window. But i think it's necessary to grow in our mind.
Exchanging ideas is good to think different.
No one uses them anymore because they technically aren't allowed in any fire department. However, in DC we have all recruits climb the tower with one. It was a good confidence builder.
It would have to be a great confidence builder as my great grandfather selected only roofers and turnverneins to give the demonstration of the pompier system when he was showing STL officials the benefits of implementing the system in the STL fire department.
I asking myself a question : who's the owner of the original pompier ladder.
We can see there's many countries using it. The real difference is for the US pompier ladder. It looks specific form
Christ Hoell had the copyright for the Hoell Ladder and equipment in the USA that went along with his training on the pompier system, but he learned of the pompier while he was a fire fighter in Germany. The pompier system was developed in 1828 in Schwabeshgruund Germany by a Mr. Behl
Great ! it's always great to get histories informations about equipment.
But, why using a french word :"pompier" to talk about a german ladder ?, it's strange isn't it ?
It was a ladder used in Europe when Hoell was there,
No one says it was a German ladder. It was first introduced to the St. Louis Fire Department on Dec. 19, 1877 by Christ Hoell.
