WASHINGTON - Investigators believe a fire that left a 4-year-old boy and a woman seriously injured started as a result of a child misusing a lighter in a bedroom of a NE apartment, D.C. Fire reports. The child was trying to set papers and clothes on fire.
The fire broke out a little before 8:30 p.m. in a three-story building in the 1700 block of Benning Road NE.
The 4-year-old victim is in critical but stable condition Thursday morning. Yesterday, officials say, firefighters found him unconscious on the kitchen floor of the second-floor unit. Another victim, a 24-year-old woman, is in serious condition. She suffered burns and possible smoke inhalation, while trying to rescue the child, officials say.
According to D.C. Fire, the woman rescued four other children, a 2, 3, 4 and a 5-year-old, from the fire before she realized she had left the 4-year-old victim behind. She tried to get back inside but couldn’t.
Officials say the fire started in a bedroom of the second floor apartment. There were smoke alarms in the unit, but unclear if they were activated.
Twenty people – 8 adults and 12 children – have been displaced by the fire. Damage is estimated at up to $60,000.
DC just made multiple rescues once again tonight in a two-alarm fire in the Potomac Gardens housing projects. Not sure about any of the details but heard they requested a ton of ambulances and the mass casualty bus. Also know that one fireman was transported. Not sure if it's serious.
