Thieves Caught; Duo Stole Michigan Firefighter's Wallet During Store Explosion

WAYNE, Mich. - Two men have been caught on surveillance using a debit card that was stolen from a firefighter as he worked at the scene of a furniture store explosion in Wayne last week.
During an interview with Local 4, Dearborn Fire Lt. Stuart Debrowsky said while he was spending hours searching for survivors of the William C. Franks furniture store blast, someone swiped his wallet from inside his truck.
Debrowsky said more than $1,000 in withdrawals were made on his card from two locations in Westland.
Debrowsky and his wife, Kristin, got married only two weeks ago.
The couple said the financial loss only compounds the disappointment.
Westland police have released the surveillance photos to the public.

No one, even firefighters involved with fighting a fire are safe from crooks... nothing has changed... this was one of the reasons firefighters had dalmatian dogs. They are very protective animals and great guard dogs. Maybe we need to go back to the days of having dalmatians on our engines?

I thought on debit cards you were not liable for charges if you reported it stolen and you would get your money back, it might take a week...also if you put dogs back on the trucks and they take the arm off of a robber, the robber will find a bleeding heart liberal judge who will want to rule against the FD

Yeah I agree we need something to protect our things. But wasn't the actual reason for dalmatians in the fire service, were to run along beside the old horse drawn pumpers to keep people out of their way? and once the horses were un-hitched they stayed with the horses to protect them? I am not wanting to start an argument or dispute your response, Its just this is what I have been told for years and wanted really to know if this was correct.

The article wasn't clear to me whether it was stolen from the on-scene apparatus or from his POV at the station. If this was happening back at the station while out on a run, there's not much more that could have been done provided he secured his vehicle properly. Volunteers - remember to lock your vehicles once you get to the station!
I am lucky to live in a state (PA) that has Fire Police, whose job it is to provide scene security and traffic control while we are on a call. It's nice to have people who are dedicated to the task, rather than tying up resources that could be better used on the call. Regular law enforcement appreciates the help as well, freeing them to do tasks such as accident reconstruction or citation writing while on scene with an accident or other call.
State laws vary as to who has what authority in various situations, but even if your state doesn't have Fire Police consider a special detail who excels at traffic control and scene safety and even work with your local Police to have the individuals sworn as Special Police if necessary. The possibilities are endless and this may be a great way for volunteer departments to utilize older or less physically able members to still provide a useful service to the community.

we had a rash of departments getting paged out and it turned out to be people calling 911 and reporting a MVC or structure fire far from the station and then they come back to the hall to find all their cars broken into.Hasn't happened in a while but it's rediculous to think people come up with this s**t.How bout get a friggin job like the people your robbing. Drives me insane!!!
