Fire service still creating injuries and fatalities in training...

Today NFPA released their 2007 Firefighter Injury report. I found this to be very interesting as we are down 4% from last year. This is certainly reason for celebration. However, I also noticed in the report that we had two firefighters injured in training. I was floored. How is it in the time when students are supposed to be learning and improving their skills we are still creating unsafe environments for them? I looked back (out of curiosity) at the USFA's report on firefighter fatalities in training for 2007. This would amaze you even more. Eleven firefighters killed while involved in training activities. Maslow teaches us that in order for students to learn a basic need of safety and security must be met. How are we to meet that most basic need when statistics tell us that almost 10% of firefighter deaths are training related. While my personal opinion is that the instructors and the schools or departments should be held criminally liable, I wanted to open this out to discussion. What are your thoughts? Does anyone consider this to be an honorable way for us to manage our training? Give me your thoughts.

State of the Art Public Safety Training Center.  Thought this may be interesting to folks.  With all the budget cuts we've experienced, the voters actually approved this.

Why is this project necessary?
To provide vital hands-on tactical training for students and public safety professionals.

The Need:

  • Enrollment in FVTC’s Criminal Justice training programs has increased 60% between 2008 and 2011.
  • Fire Protection enrollment is capped because of limited training capacity. Currently, there are approximately 400 students on the wait list.
  • The burn tower is 25 years old and has exceeded its life expectancy. It is poorly located in a residential neighborhood and is stretched to capacity at 244 days of use per year.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations training shares space with Truck Driving (also experiencing strong growth) on the Appleton campus, creating serious access and scheduling challenges.
  • There is only one 6-lane indoor shooting range and we frequently turn away training opportunities due to scheduling conflicts and limited capacity.

The Objectives:

  • Expand tactical training facilities to serve the needs identified by regional police and fire departments for their employees, and for our existing program students.
  • Replace training facilities that have exceeded their useful life, including the burn tower, indoor firing range, and trench rescue unit to ensure realistic training experiences for public safety personnel.
  • Support inter-agency and inter-disciplinary training for local public safety personnel and the communities they serve.
  • Contribute to the economic development of the region, attracting trainees and revenue to this "destination" training facility.
  • Spur the development of public-private partnerships offering mutual benefits that ultimately lessens the burden on taxpayers.

Project Overview:
Our plan calls for a new training center adjacent to Outagamie County Regional Airport that combines classroom training with hands-on practice in a real-world setting. The Center will be used to train investigation, firefighting, technical rescue, pursuit, air disasters, and more. No other fully integrated training facility exists in the Midwest and only a handful of other facilities meet even a portion of the combined training needs that we will offer.

The Gas Monitor Simulator App (Gas Sim Version 1.3) was launched yesterday on the iTunes App Store. Update now and contact John for a free demo code to try it out. It's free, what's stopping you?
Do you have an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch? Download the app and try it out.

Danny, first we have been doing local IMT (INcident Managment Teams) in our area for years and it works great. If youuse the S-420 command and general staff to get started and invite all your locar departments you will have a foundation to work from. Any question e-mail me at phill@firemanagmentconsultant.com

I attended the Distance Education Symposium this weekend and one of the speakers was John Brunacini. If you didn't already know his father Retired Chief Alan "Bruno" Brunacini is working to get LIMS - Local incident Management System, which is for Type IV and V incidents. Make your opinion count and send a message to lnisbet@nfpa.org and thank you for your support
